that a forum devoted to literature should have such scanty participation. Now, if you go to a forum devoted to motorcycles, drugs or (especially) sex, WOW!, what a party you find! I'm almost tempted to use the word "sad" to describe this state of affairs, but somehow I don't have the heart to.

I think cinema has pretty much replaced literature as the main narrative art, so it's just inevitable that literature is more of a niche nowadays. It is sad in a way though.
Reading literature is probably too much like exercise for most people. Even though it's good for you, the majority of people don't do it.
