    Hostility tords reading?

My Mother used to get angry when I would read a book she said I only read to make others look stupid, so I had to hide when I wanted any peace. In school I was called all manner of names because I enjoyed reading
has any body been the object of hostility because of their love for the written word?

No, never heard of that argument before, it sounds bizarre. Welcome to LitNet, bibliophile.

No, but your mother had a perfect strategy to ensure that you would continue loving books. Segovia had to sneak off to practice guitar at night.

Isn't that what people call a bookworm for? Someone who buries their nose in a book?

There is some truth in the accusation ; reading could be considered antisocial.

I agree after all you could argue that watching TV is antisocial and to add a conundrum being on social media is antisocial. Perhaps sleeping or even working might be added to the list!
