Where is this from? I read it in 1975. The New York Times?

    I used this pre-internet and pre-google...although I did use mid-seventies Poetic License.

    "The Fugitive Slave Bill 1850
    An Act Respecting Fugitives
    from and Persons
    escaping the Servitude
    Of their Masters
    Arriving from:
Richmond, Norfolk,, New Orleans, Dorchester County, South
Carolina, Hartford County, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Prince
    George’s County
    Joe T. White
    Would rather fight than eat.
    Perry Johnson
    Eye knocked out.

    Charles Gilbert
Fleeing From Davis, A Negro Trader, Secreted Under a Hotel, Up a Tree,
Under a Floor, In a !icket on a Steamer.
    /ey travel past old towns
    Peering through cracks
    In mailrooms and rail cars.
    Newspapers mold in corners
    near the furnace and obituaries
on page two are faces without names:
    Harper Parker Rachel
    Pennypacker Gilbert Garrison
    Gibbons Cleveland Rhoades
    White McKim Johnson
    Fussell Goodwin Garrett
    Purvis Furness
    Mott Marian
    Shipley Moore
    Hopper Burris
    Corson Miller
    Harriet Tubman"

If there are no answers, I leave it to Poetic License.

Googling the beginning I found the law:
    https://www.google.com.br/search?q=T..._SJ7PL8geisb1g
But your text seems to be a quotation from a literary text.
"I seemed to have sensed also from an early age that some of my experiences as a reader would change me more as a person than would many an event in the world where I sat and read. "
