    A question about taste

We all know that not all of us like the same things we see, hear or taste. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Is it right that everyone has their own preferences and tastes? And why?/why not? >>Waiting for your views.
And what you don't know is the only thing you know
And what you own is what you do not own
And where you are is where you are not

I think it is not only a good thing that we have different subjective views of reality, but it is inevitable. If we could get our subjectivity in line, then we could dump our subjectivity into a computer. We would have totally objectified our subjectivity. A computer could then determine if a novel or movie was good or not. It would even be able to write that novel or movie.

Well, I do not quite understand this. Why is it good that people have different opinions? This may result in wide disagreement and argument. Do you think this is a good thing? Regards.

Yes, it is good that we are not in complete agreement. If we were, we would have no reason to change. We need each other to challenge our positions so we can make a relatively free choice about what we want to believe and then act upon that new position. We are doing that now when we discuss this topic.

Disagreement is inevitable and neither good nor bad. YesNo is correct that its source is subjectivity. The morality of argument depends on whether it is applied with justice (as in a reasoned debate) or injustice (as in rancor or oppression). YesNo is also right in saying (in effect) that argument can lead to growth through reassessing one's own positions. The other side of that coin is that it can reaffirm one's convictions by rehearsing how one arrived there and by testing them against another perspective.

If one is in the mood for that sort of thing.
