Well, cacian, I´m not native in English, but for me not to consummate a marriage means that the married couple had no sexual intercourse after the oficial wedding. This was very important in former times when the recently married couple often had sex for the first time after marriage. It was easier to brreak up or anulate a marriage that was not consummated. I don´t know how things are considered today from a legal point of view, as the usual thing is people having sex before they get married.

I agree with Danik about what consummating a marriage means.
Since we are a pair-bonding species, having sex typically bonds the partners emotionally whether they are married or not which is why breaking up is often difficult.
