Reading in foreign language before reading in native language.

    Hi Literature Network!

I'd like to receive some opinions on reading in foreign language before native language. I had never finished a book in my life until recently. It's embarrassing to admit it and I felt like an ignorant individual but whatever. So, the first book I read was 1984 and the second one was The Stranger (both in English) which I really enjoyed them. What are the pros and cons of doing this? Does it affect how I literately think? Thanks.

I read in English before I read in my mother tongue as Gaelic was not taught in the school. I believe that was very bad for me but only in the sense that three spoons of arsenic are bad for you and the fourth is fatal.
