How Lucifer Resigned From Hell by Casey Lee and Fairlane Raymundo

The funniest jokes are those that are meant. The most painful lies are those that reveal truths. The most unbelievable stories are those that are real. This is what makes How Lucifer Resigned From Hell a hard and easy read. It’s both funny and painful, open and scary.

The book actually follows two stories:
    • that of an unnamed character and his quest to find true love despite and in spite of what people believes to be a distorted understanding of the world because of ADHD
    • that of Lucifer and how he actually resigned from hell

The two stories are connected but still independent of each other. Both stories, as the title would have implied, dwells on the effects and motivations of love but provide two different messages. Both, dare are I say are valid.

Validity, however, is not the point of contention. Written by Casey Lee and Fairlane Raymundo, the book wreaks of an amazing amount of indifference towards thousands years of tradition and beliefs used as laws to maintain a livable society. It is sometimes too different and too true that it uncovers and hits all the weak spots of our being covered by hypocrisy and superficiality. The even more painful part is that it does not intend to challenge anything.

The book is told from the point of a view of an ADHD-immersed character. His mind is in constant struggle to understand the world he is living in and what is considered common humanity. However, in his effort to find the path, he often finds himself lost (or found) in another world that operates with a much simpler set of truths and thoughts. These truths and thoughts often becomes the light that exposes the questionable beliefs we all thought were ultimate truths.
It is hard to accept that someone that some consider to be insane would end up asking the most vital questions. If, however, you do find yourself courageous enough to, at the very least, see things from the lead character’s position, you just might find the best answers to the most difficult to answers questions about life and love.

The plot of the narrative itself does not contain any unexpected twist. The events of the lead character’s life story are pretty simple. It has all the components you would expect of growing up but it is the thoughts put into the recollections of events that make it a unique story. A birthday party becomes more than a celebration of one’s life, it becomes an introspection on how relationships are built and how those relationships affect the choices people make in their future relationships.

It is, perhaps, the greatest strength of the book, the ability to talk about the most complex of issues and make it sound funny while pinching the heart, soul or mind, we have struggled our entire life to protect.
