    Very obsessed with this notion of China and Chineseness. Often at the expense of more international appeal. China is too obsessed with itself.

    Seems from this distance that the CP government are walking a tightrope of a desire to maintain their own power while creating the forms of economic liberalisation that creates wealth for large numbers of people. It cannot last. There is an inbuilt contradiction there. I know nothing much about Chinese literature.
