Harun al-Rashid, the fifth Abbasid Caliph, one day when he was on a trip accompanied with his retinues and his guarders met a girl accompanying with her fellows girls near Tigris River going there to wash their dishes.
Accidentally the caliph passed by the place the girl was busy on a particular chants of that days.
As soon as Harun al-Rashid heard the chanting he ordered the girl to repeat what she has said:
The girl repeated her verses :
Advise your vision not to visit me during my sleep.
In order to sleep well and my fierce heart will rest deep.
Seriously was tossing with hands at sleeplessness mat,
I ask always; if there is any way of cordiality, I can keep.
After the girl finished, the Caliph asked her to change the rhyme providing keep on the same meanings.
The girl soon chanted:
Tell your vision not to come there at drowsiness
Then I could have rest and my body got feverless.
As a chronic disease it was shaken over a grieved drugget
Could I find the way of reunion, which it is priceless?
The Caliph for the second time asked the girl to retain on meanings and change the rhyme.
The girl immediately repeated the verses:
Order your vision not to visit me at my bedroom.
In order to rest and the fire, which burns my bones, will be calm.
Seriously was tossing over a mat stuffed with arrows!
You know, I ask always, if is there any way to meet you?
For the third time, the Caliph ordered her to make the same.
She said…..
Tell your vision not to visit me at the time of slumber.
To be released from the passions that hurt my rip's cover.
Seriously, the hands tossed it on a pall mixed with tears.
Could I find another way to meet my rest... O, lover?
After the caliph was acquainted from the girl sharp- mind and her quality in saying poetry the Caliph soon asked the girl hand and married her.
