War is Peace,Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength

I would like to offer my interpritation of these three statements: War is Peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength, these three statements are basically the motto of the party, all three of these impliment, what is mentioned very early in the book, "double think." War is peace, war is the oppisite of peace yet this statment is still concieved as true, this two things SHOULD cancel out. However they don't war is peace is true because when a nation is at war, isn't there peace within the nation? It unites the people of the nation allowing for peace within it. Freedom is slavery is tough but i believe what Orwel means is when a person has complete freedom, that person is burdened with many responsibilities, much liike a slave. Ignorance is strength is easy in a dictatporship or not even a dictatorship it can be any form of government, if the governed are to stupid to realize injustices and corruption, it further strengthens the government, basically allowing government to have complete control over them. This in my opinion is occurring a lot today, many people listen to the radio and watch tv and they beleieve every single ounce of what they're told, they dont go out and reasearch it for themselves, if a station like cnn says it, it just HAS to be true. I was appaled when i heared that less than 2% of the American public even reads. Our life and culture is now flooded around the media and we believe every ounce of what they tell us. One more thing; we now have so many things to keep our minds occupied, and i beleive Orwell blatenly states this in the book for examlpe Pornosec, distribution of pronography by the government, it takes attention away from big brother. i was informed that in the previous presidential election that more people voted in American Idol than in the Election. This is sad. A lot of the media is now flooded with what other people are doing what Kim Kardashion wore to the VMA's. Who cares? All this stuff is taking the attention away from what is important. Who our presidet will be, politicts thats what is importnant not who will advance in American Idol.

I think you are naive about what it takes to govern a country, and doubly naive about Orwell. And also naive about what people believe at face value that the governent tells them.
We will globalize democracy and these kind of conflicts do not play a role in our thinking. There are some stupid people out there, but that's not the vast majority.

Cafolini, how do you interpret these slogans? War with other nations does create the patriotism that brings unity and peace within a country, right? By fighting for freedom, dying and suffering for it, we become slaves to the idea. Of course the government is stronger when people are ignorant, like the proles, because it is easier to get them to believe propaganda. Also, how can you say that "these kind of conflicts do not play a role in our thinking," when Orwell is obviously warning us about a possible future?

I believe your interpertation of what Orwell was trying to say is spot on. It shows in society what the people prioritize and Orwell was warning us about the dangers of being distracted. Todays culture is an exact replica of what we are being warned about throughout the book.
