I am a bit confused. How was Independence Day chosen when according to the poll it had 1 vote and The Magnificent Ambersons has 2 votes?

Sloan, who voted for The Magnificent Ambersons, has less than 50 posts, which disqualifies his vote.

I did not want to choose Goon Squad because it was my own nomination. The Magnificent Ambersons does not seem available on amazon at a reasonable price so I felt going with Independence Day was a more convenient option for most.

Luckily, my library has Ford's book so downloaded it already and will start reading it by Wednesday hopefully.

This is my try to get through this book. Even though the writing style is good, I cannot get into the story for some reason. I am wondering if that is due to the abundance of books with similar theme (not even sure what it is about but I have never been too shy about making assumptions about things I don't know about).

    Has anyone read this book?

I had the same problem. I tried reading this book once before. And while I would not say it was bad, or poorly written, I just did not find it interesting to read. I did not really relate to the characters, and found I just did not really care. I thought perhaps that in my case my problem was my age, that I felt I had no common ground with the narrator and his life experiences, that I just could not get into it.

I am starting to read the first book in these series: The Sportwriter. Been told that it might make the second book, Independence Day, more meaningful.

Determined to get through it this time!
