Need help remembering a book I read...

The plot:

A guy wakes up in a strange hotel, he's apparently been traveling, but doesn't know why or where. He realizes that he doesn't have any of his belongings, no money, and doesn't know anybody. He attempts to talk to people, but everybody speaks gobbledegook. He goes outside the hotel, and there are just masses of people moving everywhere. Throughout the book, he realizes his terrible situation, attempts to find somebody to help him, and then he enters into some kind of crazy war-zone. I believe the book ends with him still in this predicament.

I took this book out of the library at the same time that I read The Master and Margarita, if that offers any clues..
