I disagree with the points of the book letting itself down, from start until almost the finish I would have guessed Dr Mannette to be the major character of the book.
As I ploughed along this was seeming to be confirmed through the revelation of Mannette's letter.
Dickens succeeds (although cartons revelation of love is realised) in making me actually believe that carton is the worthless scum, the bottom of humanity that he makes himself out to be, and the least likely person to do what he did in the end.
Upon those final words, Dickens succeeds in making the reader believe, that
no matter who you are, You are capable of good.

Personally he made me believe that humanity can save itself, if we could only identify our common goodness.
Charles Dickens, a benefactor of humanity
