She was an adopted child left by a prostitute at the home of an alchemist. But, almost until the end of the novel, she doesn't know anything about it. She lives believing that the alchemist is her real father. Alchemist teaches her all the secrets of his science, but when a young man comes to visit her father, she falls in love with him, her father refuses to agree with her marriege... many complications come into her life to make her understand, after many problems and sufferings, why was her father against her marriage.

The story is placed in 18th century. And there is an interesting observation of the fact that in those days a wife was totally dependant on her husband after getting married when he gets a complete command over her belongings and can do with her property whatever he wants.

Attracted by the title, I expected much more, although I liked the style of the author.
