    A google books search will help with narrative/stylistic questions as its a popular book with a great deal of secondary criticism to play with.
    Also, look into Victorian thing theory, it was specifically prominent around the 1860s, personification of an object to aid the narrative is a really interesting way to look at the novel, try researching around that area?
