    Have An Accident?

    I remember - don't fully understand

Heart of Glass on the radio

    Roaring from the tunnel

Interstate 49 in the fast lane

Which had slowed to a crawl

I recall the noise before impact

Couldn't tell you what it was

    Cops everywhere two megaphones apiece

'Move along! Nothing to see here!'

They were wrong - plenty of seahorses

And octopusses drifting across the landscape

Somehow the Pontiac had become airborne

Crashes through the windscreen of the first Big Mack

Which suddenly stops, allowing the Ferrari to

Cruise underneath, losing its lid and scooping

The Beetle up and over the bridge

While the rest of the convoy rear-ends itself

    Into a compressed accordian

    Bloodied bodyparts strewn for miles

A muffled howling from the Gypsy caravan

Reveals a fortuneteller had swallowed her

Crystal Ball - her flying wig worn by a soaring toucan

The man dressed as a crocodile

Runs around on fire clutching his ears

The blue-eyed buffalo gazing down from the hill

The girl with her head stuck in a bucket

    Tapdancing to an imaginary rhythm

One fireman waving his arms while stuck up the ladder

The other spurting water up and over

The astronaut trying to gather his scorpions

Into the hole with a wooden box around it

While being booted in the butt by an irate goat

The submarine stuck upright into the embankment

    The rhinocerous in the tree

Silver knights on clydesdales plodding to the joust

The storm breaks just then - a fork of lightning

Ripping through the stray airship which bursts into flame

And spirals downward toward the horizon

As the cooler-than-cool retired detective arrives

    'Everybody just keep calm -

'I've seen this sort of thing before...'

You do paint quite the vivid scene, MM! I love the surrealism in this, that has just enough narrative logic to follow along, but with plenty of "jump out at you" moments.

Thankyou MS - I wrote this before reading the Sunday Morning homepage - and would you believe it - there was a multi car and truck pile-up today caused by a dust-storm, with many injured and dying

When I read about it I thought that's it, no more revisions - so this is the final version

This reads like a bloody "Yellow Submarine". I have no idea what the symbols portend, other than confusion, but I'm somewhat content with being confused. As surreal as this is, I must say, there is something medieval about this poem! Like a cruel work of very early fantasy.

Like a 21st Century Breughel perhaps? That's certainly the effect I was after, when first experienced in childhood without the full background understanding of what all the symbols mean, just a bunch of intricate details leaping off the canvas

Though in this case it's more the idea of overwhelming catastrophe and ensuing chaos experienced and interpreted by the young mind later reflecting on what he remembered and how the years have filtered fact through dream

    It's hard to miss.

But hey, every joke has some honesty behind it.

This ought to be turned into a children's picture book.

Booted in the butt by an irate goat!

Mystery...It fits your name to a tee....It is either a dream or a piece of your real life! But something about it is real...I can feel it.

Either way, I did enjoy it!

@ deryk - that's is correct - would be a lame joke if not the case

@ every - interesting suggestion - you got your paints out?

@ Varenne - Sounds yummy! Hey - where you been anyway - ain't heard from you for donkey's yonks!

@ kitty paws - Yep I'm safe, safe and sound like a pearl in an oyster shell - and I'm glad you enjoyed it kitty - and the 'real' aspect of which you refer is, in fact, a fact, and a sad fact at that, but considering you weren't there, well you're lucky you didn't see it because describing buckets of blood is a bit different from seeing buckets of blood

Mystyr, I was giving exclusive attention to creative impulses. They come and go. Thanks for remembering me. I'm happy to be back in the mix.

Varenne - creativity must always precede everything else! Good to hear it - can't wait to see/hear/read - whatever-it-is it!

JB - thanks, I take it that you posted it on that other thread to show your sincerity? It is especially good that it causes you to want to write - my main purpose is hopefully to inspire after all

I posted it on the other thread as that was my intention and true to the title of the thread. You have a unique voice as far as I see and in this poem it totally worked for me.
