Life. (I've written many books, leather-bound books.)
Everything. I am human soup.
I want to play. I really, really do.
Sleep - dreams - observation. My brain is a sponge with a life of its own. I just take dictation.

My first novel was written based on a real life drama that was in the news. The second one is underway, and is a purely imaginative idea that's probably derived from hundreds of thrillers read during my adolescence and young adulthood!
Harder to find, in my opinion, is inspiration to keep you going through the process and getting what you started finished. That's important too

Want to know how to write a book - fast?
The flu. I get loopy and tend to have either really vivid dreams or hallucinations (not sure which they are, really) when I have a high fever, and I was curled up on my floor really sick a few years back and wrote out a really incoherent intro to a short story. It's utter crap, and even after I've pounded it and smoothed it out a bit, I'm finding I want to rework it again, but it was the inspiration for the novel I'm on. Actually I'm almost done with draft one, which is exciting since I thought it would be about a 10k short story when I started it... it's not, at all. /rabbit trail But yes, the flu. And Le Morte D'Arthur, though I had to scrap those scenes after I wrote them, because they were horrible (seriously, embarrassingly bad). Still, it gave me a ton of inspiration, more than I thought it did actually.
