Angels descending probably alludes to Jacob's ladder of Genesis. Coming down from heaven, angels rescued the poet from desolation. But earthly agents - burglar, banker, father - dragged her down once more. The infinite saves: the finite destroys.

Genesis 28:12___And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
