Short Story Club: September nominations and poll

yea I wasn't sure if we should create a new thread or what. Anyway I do have a nomination and it is for "The Soul is not a Smithy" by David Foster Wallace.... it is in the short story collection Oblivion

It is unfortunately as far as I know not available for free online.

Short Story Club: September nominations and poll

OK, then! It seems the Short Story Club is a huge phenomenon! Let's hope it keeps that way!

So, nominate the stories! We'll do as in August, eight nominees from which we will read the first two.

Edit: Sheherezade will be moving the nominations from the other thread to this one. These are the nominations so far:

"The Soul is not a Smithy" by David Foster Wallace

    "The Overcoat" by Nikolai Gogol

"A Whisper in the Dark" by Louisa May Alcott

"The Marquise of O." by Heinrich von Kleist

"Dead Man's Path" by Chinua Achebe

I nominate 'Lust, Caution' by Eileen Chang.
"...You are not wrong, who deem
    That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?..." E. A. Poe

I will nominate Murder Mysteries by Neil Gaiman. So we've got the eight nominees:

"The Soul is not a Smithy" by David Foster Wallace

    "The Overcoat" by Nikolai Gogol

"A Whisper in the Dark" by Louisa May Alcott

"The Marquise of O." by Heinrich von Kleist

"Dead Man's Path" by Chinua Achebe

    "Lust, Caution" by Eileen Chang

    "Araby" by James Joyce

    "Murder Mysteries" by Neil Gaiman

And Rores28, it seems you'll have to add the poll to this thread

Araby was like one of my favorite stories in The Dubliners collection.

Will there be a poll, or should we voice an opinion by posting to this thread?

I'd like to second Araby by Joyce. Any of the stories from Dubliners would be a great choice though.
Currently Reading: Anathem, Finnegan's Wake, The Brothers Karamazov

    Alright, polls up.

As a side note "The Soul is Not a Smithy" is a reference to a passage in "The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," if that makes it any more desirable. Specifically it is challenging something that Stephen Daedalus says.

These are very good and the decision was very difficult, hopefully we can keep them in the next poll as well, or maybe allow re-nominations?
I'd rather have questions that I can't answer than answers that I can't question.

I hadn't noticed! I knew the words soul and smithy ringed a bell. "To forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated consciense of my race" says Daedalus. This makes it more desirable indeed. And I haven't read anything by Foster Wallace.
Then again Araby is my favourite story from Dubliners, and there's so much we can discuss about it.
And then again I myself nominated Gaiman's Murder Mysteries... mmmmm this is going to be a difficult decision...

Yes, re-nominations are allowed. In fact Gogol's The Overcoat was re-nominated.
