Hey Guys, I'm writing a novel for VERY VERY light reads...
But I'm really having trouble in getting good critical reviews... So urgently need your help...
This is the first chapter of my dream-novel:
Please comment...
Tiya - And the night it all started...
"It's been a pleasure knowing you Somu, I just wish that things wouldn't have turned out this way, but I guess that's destiny..."
DESTINY, Huh! If I could somehow miraculously alter the course of history and make one of the greatest inventions of all time disappear, it would definitely be the aeroplane. Curse the Wright brothers for their discovery! However, I guess to make her stay, I would also have had to make half of the means of communication known to man non-existent : including the mobile phone, the computer, the internet, the postal delivery system... well, u get the picture !
This is what she said to me after about half an hour of apologizing and crying- but I wasn’t satisfied. I hated the fact that the greatest friend I had known up to that point in time had to board the next flight to Delhi. I hated that she was gonna leave me all alone at such a crucial juncture in my life. I hated that she didn't even feel that I was important enough to know about it: I mean, who tells your best friend that you are gonna leave for a city miles away, never to return, in about three hours. And she actually expected me to "understand". Women have an unusual way of doing things. At times it seems as if they expect us to react exactly as we are supposed to, say exactly the right words, and do precisely the right things - all this, without even a clue about what's going on in their minds!
I swear I would have walked right out of her house, without even saying goodbye for perhaps, the last time. But then, just then she unleashed the greatest weapon with which a woman is armed, perpetually threatening the sanity of a man's mind. I spotted a drop of tear climbing down her cheek. Had this been any other situation, I would have simply taken a photo of her and would have kept blackmailing her for the rest of her life. I had never seen her cry before. Tiya was the kind of girl who ridiculed anyone and everyone who had the misfortune of crying in her presence. She believed that all situations should be taken lightly - there was already enough of **** to handle in life, and crying only makes matters worse. So, witnessing this event was nothing short of a 440 Volt electric shock to me. I patted her shoulder softly, to make her believe I understood what she was going through. She broke down into my arms, and sobbed bitterly for a few minutes.
"You don't have any idea why I'm crying so bad, do you?"
"Not really! I just wanted to support you. Plus, which guy would want to miss the opportunity to hold a hot girl such as yourself tightly in his arms?"
"Oh dear God! You are so darn cheap!!!”
We laughed, as I held her in my arms, wishing that time would stop right there. She promised to mail to me every week, keep me posted about everything that went on in her life. I had known Tiya ever since she was an embryo: or so it seemed. Three years before this night, she had crashed her bicycle into mine while riding like a maniac (and the horrific part is that she still did ride like an absolute psycho!). After realizing that her ‘cycling’ talent had ruined my dress and endowed me with injuries enough to even make Arnold Schwarzenegger of Terminator cry out in agony, she helplessly tried to apologize. Any other girl, and I would have cursed her enough to ensure she and all those who knew her would rot in hell for all eternity- but this girl had something special in her... She was too cute to be human. Jet black shiny hair, big, brown eyes, a drop-dead-at-sight beautiful face, and a perfect figure- all the right curves in all the right places: she looked like a frigging angel. There is something about cute girls- they look even cuter when they are scared! How could I be rude to such a complete ‘babe’? I introduced myself:
”Hi, I am Somu, and since you messed me up so bad, the least you can do is to enlighten me by providing me with your phone number!”
Although confused for a moment, soon she realised my intensions. All her worries seemed to vanish into the thin air. I could tell by the look on her face- she was starting to enjoy this.
“Umm, did u realize the fact that your right leg is bleeding?”
“All thanks to you....”
“And instead of insulting me and my driving, you choose to take my phone number! Are you okay? Did you hurt your head so bad just now, or were you mad all along?”
Let’s admit it- being admonished by a hot girl feels great. I was loving it like a kid loves his candy...
“Well, I could have just yelled at the top of my voice and abused the **** out of you, but that would end all my chances of befriending you. And about me being loony: I was all right about 5 minutes ago, but the sight of a girl like you is enough to make any guy go crazy, isn’t it?”
I knew I had served the ball pretty well, and it was now in her court. The only question was, how would she respond?
“9836552148, and the name’s Tiya”, she said with a smile on her face.
Yes! I had scored again... Soon, one more name was going to be added to the long list of all the girls I had ever dated... And that was how I met Tiya.
Suddenly, we heard a loud bang on the door. I returned back to the present- I was still hugging Tiya, her face still as beautiful and radiant as it was the day I first saw her. The door creaked open. Perplexed by the moment, our embrace broke. It was her elder brother Arindam.
"Dude! Why are you so frigging late?? Our flight's in about two and a half hours. Where the **** have you been???"
"Well, since you guys didn't really think I should be alerted in advance of your 'LEAVE TOWN FOREVER' Plans, I was blissfully sleeping at my house."
"Sorry dude, we were actually planning on abandoning you without notice, but as you can see, we need an extra hand to pack all this crap. Your girlfriend there has an entire suitcase dedicated for the storage of her Bras!"
"Shut up Da, I am not his girlfriend! Come on Somu, You know how da is, and NO, I don't have a special suitcase for my inner-ware!" She responded, reading the curiosity in my eyes.
"Chill Sis! Here Somu, have this."
He threw me a can of Hayward’s 5000 and started gulping another himself. I knew the beer meant a lot coming from his side. Those were his last cans and I knew just how much he loved beer- For the last two years he had been preparing for IIT and drinking like a fish .But I guess he wanted to live the golden moments all at once. More laughs and tears followed, marking the end of my good old days with Tiya and her family. I somehow knew that things between Tiya and me would never be the same again. Distance has a characteristic property of taking the warmth out of any relationship – and the truth is that no matter how advanced technology gets, it can never return the warmth. All I knew was that I was gonna miss these guys too much. For the past year and a half, I had spent almost all of my weekends at their aunt’s house, where they stayed. Now, they were finally gonna go back to their parents in Delhi. I noticed a thing about life- no news is good news: there is always something about them that you may not like, but have to accept. Tiya and her ‘da’ were being reunited with her parents after four years, and yet, I couldn’t be happy- no matter how much I tried...
