roller skate anymore?

Not sure bout "skates" as such but I do recall plenty of rollerblade sales when I was working at can tire.
There once was a scotsman named Drew
Who put too much wine in his stew
He felt a bit drunk
And fell off his bunk
And landed smack into his shoe ~(C) Ms Niamh Anne King
Would that I could! There was a summer holiday that I seemed to live on my skates: we lived at the top of a very steep hill and though I tried, I never made it all the way down the hill - I always ended up frantically grasping someone's gatepost to bring myself to a slithering halt. I can still feel the mounting excitement/panic as the speed built up!
Nice! On another website a poster was talking about getting new skates and it got me to thinking that I want to give skating a try agin but I've never seen anyone skating around here. Now the big decision is inline vs quad skates. I was leaning towards quads but after researching it seems that inlines are better for outdoors.

Yes, I knew that... but then again, so can dresses but I've never bought them for that money Keep your eyes out and ask around: you can definitely find them for less!
I've got skates for quite a while now, but I don't use them often: I still haven't figure out the "brakes". Once I stand on those things, I won't fall and I can even get quite some speed on me - but for the life of me I wouldn't know how to stop if I had to. Except by just letting myself fall, but that can become painfull
So if you do get those skates, and figure out how to brake - please, let me know.

Most skates have a sort of rubber lump at the front, which acts as a brake, although if you shove it in to the deck too hard you tend to take your first flying lesson, generally unsuccessfully. (Flying is defined as "throwing yourself at the ground and missing.") There is still a cafe near here where the waitresses use roller skates, and pretty impressive it is too. Mind you, the coffee has white horses on it!

Skates!! God no - not with my ankles - ever! .. and the pot holes... and those clever buggers who can skate round you backwards ... and the road rash... and the scabby face... and the sore wrists...
Now what about a sensible bike. Even room for luggage. No? Segway then?
YES! I do roller derby with those suckers! So much fun!
Inlines are definitely better for outdoors- the quads will not treat you kindly on uneven surfaces, or even very slight inclines/hills, especially for a beginner.
Naked except for a cigarette, you let your mind drift and forget your disbelief. Feel the chill down your back and the flutter of wings through dandelion fields, and forget the pull of gravity in a night without stars.
I lack eloquence and commitment to my arguments. They are half baked, and I will begin passionately, and then abandon them.
But aren't quads easier to balance on? I'm not that coordinated.

When I was a kid there were no inlines, and we all skated outdoors, on skates with steel wheels and no bearings. What bliss it was when skates started to have rubber tyres and roller bearings.
Voices mysterious far and near,
Sound of the wind and sound of the sea,
Are calling and whispering in my ear,
Whifflingpin! Why stayest thou here?
Ah, Whifflingpin, how I yearned for rubber wheels and bearings - but they were expensive and my mother correctly divined that the craze had a life-span of one season, two at the most, and would not allow me to raid my Post Office savings book, no mattter how much I hinted and begged.
