Female Charecters in Crime and Punishment

How would i show that the female characters in C&P are not trodden personalities but strong characters? this refers mostly to the main charecters, like Dunya and Sonya. even nastasya might work.
    thanks

One of the best books on this subject is Gary Cox's "Tyrant and Victim in Dostoevsky". Here's a review of the book:

The review is somewhat negative, but I nonetheless think that Tyrant and Victim helped me make sense of how apparently downtrodden personalities like Dunya and Sonya eventually gain the upper hand over their more assertive counterparts. If I could sum up Cox's view of this Tyrant-Victim axis into one line it would be "the meek will inherit the earth".

The book is only 100 pages long, and it should be available in your local university's library.
