If I understood the ending in the PBS series correctly (which seems to be confirmed by Wikipedia's synopsis), Amy and Arthur had the same mother, but different fathers. If so, wouldn't this have been a "show-stopper" for their marriage?

It is confusing, but before she died, Arthur's mother sent his paternal grandfather a letter of her circumstances. The grandfather changed his will to have his estate go to a baby born in the debtor's prison on the same day that Arthur's mother died.
