Did you feel cheated by the ending?

Did anyone else feel cheated by the ending? I thought it would have felt more natural if John ended up with Ruth instead but of course, then we wouldn't have had a happy ending (which are very important to me, although unnecessary).

I guess it's because all throughout the novel, Lorna seemed to me a very wispy, ghostlike character, angelic, too-good-to-be-true like and one of those innocent, beautiful (perhaps dislikeably so) girls who one can never understand.

I reckon John has got himself lumbered with a high maintenance princess there.

Oh, I don't know. I think Lorna Doone is a very courageous, selfless young woman who was brought up by a family of murderers and criminals, and had to deal with their constant watch over her and the prospect of marrying her 'cousin' who is the crulest of the lot. She is hard-working, sincere, beautiful, and loves John with all her heart. Of course, there is the possibility she could be a tad spoiled, but I prefer to think on the positive, romantic side of things
