Gore Vidal - fiction and nonfiction

Does anyone here go in for Gore Vidal? What do you think of him as an author of fiction? I am not American and I haven't got much clue about whether he has a point or not in his non-fiction. I am currently reading his Perpetual war for perpetual peace and I don't know what to make of it... What do you think?

Haven't read him, but I've heard he's a good writer of fictionalized biographies (e.g. 'Burr').
