I have just finnished this story, and I thought it was fabulous. The prose of Hesse is so elegant, and flowing, and I always feel as if his writing speaks to me in someway.
This was a beautiful story about a young man who upon returning home for the first time after setting off for himself, as a moment in which he sort of gets to relive his childhood again, as well as create some new experinces for himself. He is upon that very brink of age where his youth is starting to flee, and so he has one last moment to glorify in it, before it abandons him completely.
The ending of the story is a touch bittersweet in nature, but it does end upon a hopeful note fringed with sadness.
