The Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card.

Although it is an easy flowing, not-so-boring-to-read book, nothing much happens. The story takes places in an alternative historic America, where pioneers consider witchcraft and supernatural happenings as ordinary part of life. Till the end, I was hoping 'something' would happen but I was left with a feeling of '...and?' when I finished the book. I am not very enthusiastic about reading the other books in the series but might do just to see if anything will actually happen...

Yeah, Seventh Son is not really a good book. If anyone wants to read something good by Orson they should try Ender's Game! (You should do a book review for this book Scher!)

Set in an alternate US where magic works. A kid Alvin is born the seventh son of a seventh son which gives him special powers. Not much happens in this book but it has promise for the rest of the series. This was a quick easy read.

Card's morality I find greatly goes against mine. I don't know so much about Alvin, but Ender and his essays against homosexuality really make me stay away from his works.

Well, it's been a long time since I've read the Alvin Maker series, but I really liked it when I did. Peggy leaves and studies and comes back as an educated teacher, in disguise of an older woman. She becomes Alvin's teacher in disguise, after having watched him from 'afar' for all her life, and teaches him, while other conflicts go on around them.
