I'm taking my chances posting below Amra. (We've exchanged a bon mot or two.)

I'm reading 'Public Triumph, Private Tragedy' by Steve Paikin. Many Canadians -- and most Ontarions -- will recognize the subject matter and the author. The book is about John Robarts, Ontario Premier during the 1960's. I recommend it to my compatriots.

I have just finishedTales of St Austins by PG Wodehouse. It is possibly the silliest book ever written and I enjoyed it all.

These days I've been reading 'Introducing Sartre' by Philip Thody and Howard Read. I've always been interested in philosophy and when I was in London last year I bought a few books on the subject and this is the last one. It's not very in depth but you get the idea and his thoughts.

    1. Erica Jong: Fear of Fifty - A Midlife Memoir
    2. i didn't exactly decide to read that book. i took it out because i didn't know it was her memoirs and the title sounded as if it had to do with a term paper i was writing. then i thought i might just as well have a look at it.. we read her novel "Fear of Flying" in a seminar i took
    3. "You know you're on the skids when you play yourself in the movie version of your life," my father used to warn me when I was nine.
    4. p. 90, but I've read a couple of random chapters that are after p. 90
    5. i like it alright.. it brings up some unresolved issues about women's life in the US (also applies to Europe).. easy to read and sometimes quite funny, very outspoken about s*x and stuff

    1) The Fellowship of the Ring - J.R.R Tolkein

    2) I am reading the book because I watch the movie over and over, and since I love to read, thought it was a good idea.

    3) 1st Sentence: "When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleveny - first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton."

    4) Currently on page 118

    5) I am really enjoying it. There is so much to the story that they cut from the movie. Guess that is why books are so much better than their movie counterparts.

Yup, I read The Hobbit. It is on my list as one of my favorites. I am thinking that The Fellowship, when I finish it, will be on my list as well.

Right now I am reading The Mill on the Floss. Someone here suggested it. I am really enjoying it, but it is a rather bulky project; it will take some time.

I like Eliot's style and the way you never feel quite comfortable. Even during happy times, the characters cause me unease. Every calm moment is laced with conflict or wounded feelings. I have been told this is a story of startling sadness, so I think this constant agitation just below the surface may be the author's way of leading to deeper grief.

Don't spoil it for me, though, for I am only half through.
