    Queen Margot

Ok. I am about a fifth done with this book. In a few other threads in this forum people have called Dumas "anti-woman". In this book he portrays women as strong, yet manipulative. Very similar to Milady, in The Three Musketeers.

It has occured to me that it may, in fact, tell us something about Dumas' upbringing. I have not read a biography of Dumas, so I could be completly off. It seems like every woman in his novels is based on the "first love" syndrom. You love them. You idolize them. Then they break your heart, and you notice all the bad things they did. You notice their manipulative behavior.

I'm really tired, so I can't articulate my point very well. Any opinions?

It seems, there are two main types of women characters in his books. One is as you said, and the other one is like Constance or Diana in La Dame De Monsoreou - romantic, moral, loving and a victim of unkind fate.
Fear is the mother of morality.

Cool If you are reading Marguerite de Valois ....

be sure to watch the French movie of the book, Reine Margot. It is the best Dumas movie I have seen. There are also two more Valoise Romances in this series. See my post which says Attention Dumas Fans!
