hi guys, am a new member here and am in need of help. The question is what charles dickens' purpose of literature? why he write the way he write, what is he tring to accomplish in novels such as hard times and a tale of two cities. I belive it to be political, as he is revealing the difference between the rich and the poor, demanding social equality. what do you guys think? I would perfer you guys going along the political line, thanks for your help

It depends on the book, but the main point throughout most of his novels is social cricitism; the poor treatment of paupers (due to the New Poor Law) in Oliver Twist, and the slow bureaucratic nonsense of the law in Bleak House are good examples.

Behind other novels are also autobiographical motivations, with David Copperfield and, to a lesser extent, Great Expectations as most prominent examples. He used these books to process some of his youth experiences, so to speak.
