What is your instinctive reaction when encountering a socialist?

I would guess, in your question, that I would only know that someone was a socialist by the amount of talking that they are doing. And most people, who talk too much have what I like to call Diarrhea Of The Throat. So my instinctive reaction would be to diagnose said individual with D.O.T. and not have an opinion on their being a socialist.

Are you able to give public speeches, or does the very thought freeze you?

It has taken years to get over the terror, but I am now able to give occasional talks and lessons as assigned. When I was in 1-12 grades (I missed K for some reason) I took sick days when having to give book reports and the like and never made them up. I'm still working on "Talking Head" syndrome when giving lessons, and keeping my head raised when speaking from a prepared talk (no teleprompters).

It happened on what started as a normal Sabbath Day
A Councilor out prowling the Ward for His prey
Through the corridors in his dark suit and tie
Searching for me, though I knew not, nor why
I had but adjourned from the Sunday school class
To spend a penny, washed up, then alas
