I like most everything by van Morrison.

chain of fools by Aretha franklin...I had to cheat, and sadly, I actually have the song! ack!

okay here's an easy one (I think):

"All day long they work so hard
Till the sun is goin' down
Working on the highways and byways
    And wearing, wearing a frown
You hear them moanin' their lives away
    Then you hear somebody sa-ay

That's the sound of the men... "

Working on the chain--gang! Sam Cooke, Chain Gang These oldies were new when I was young

In the quiet hours before the dawn
    Buttons up his uniform
Takes out his badge and pins it on
For thirty years he's enforced the law
And he drives out on the Rio Grande
Across the dry and sunburned land
And on this side he takes his stand again
    Some of us laugh
    Some of us cry
    Some of us smoke
    Some of us lie
But it's all just the way
that we cope with our lives...

    Bordertown - Dan Seals

Since the Prehistoric ages and the days of ancient Greece
Right down through the Middle Ages
Planet earth kept going through changes
And then the Renaissance came and times continued to change

one of my all time favorites:

"Give me a ticket for an aeroplane
I ain't got time to take no fast train
Oh, the lonely days are gone
    I'm coming home
Oh, my baby she wrote me..."

Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent

    Turn and run!
    Nothing can stop them,
Around every river and canal their power is growing.
    Stamp them out!
    We must destroy them,
They infiltrate each city with their thick dark warning odour.

didn't know that one--genesis' the return of the giant hogweed...

I wonder how we pick the song lyrics we do...

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
    Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
    The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

    The weather started getting rough,
    The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore
    Of this uncharted desert isle
    With Gilligan,
    The Skipper too.
    The millionaire
    And his wife,
    The movie star,
    The professor and Mary Ann,
    Here on Gilligan's Isle.

    Theme from Gilligan's Island

I think you're gonna like it
I think you're gonna feel like you belong
    A nocturnal vacation
    Unnecessary sedation
You want to feel at home 'cause you belong

    Theme from Gilligan's Island
Next upon the bill in our House of Vaudeville
    We've a stripper in a till
What a thrill! What a thrill!
And not content with that, with our hands behind our backs,
We pull Jesus from a hat,
Get into that! Get into that!

"Karn Evil 9" ~ Emerson, Lake, and Palmer

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please"
    Some of us laugh
    Some of us cry
    Some of us smoke
    Some of us lie
But it's all just the way
that we cope with our lives...

    ah, one I finally know!

cat's in the cradle by harry chapin, often makes me cry. bunches of other people have covered the song really well too. ive got versions by bob jovi, johnny cash, and guns n' roses.

and papayahed's alice cooper's welcome to my nightmare.

here's a fun one (though the topic is not). most everyone knows it, but probably don't know that they know it:

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see

    " ------------------------"
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

I try to find a way to make
    All our little joys relate
    Without that ever-present hate
But now I know that it's too late, and

    " ------------------------"
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The game of life is hard to play
    I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say

    " ------------------------"
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
And to another give my seat
For that's the only painless feat

    " ------------------------"
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger watch it grin, but

    " ------------------------"
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied 'Oh, why ask me?'

    " ------------------------"
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

    " ------------------------"
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

And you can do the same thing if you please

Johnny Mandel - Suicide is Painless

here's on that you may not know (all the more fun):

Will you ever preserve will you ever exhume
Will you watch petals shed from flowers in bloom
Nothing can live up to promise
    Nothing can stop its narrative
    Nothing in place of catalysts
And you’ll never be pure again

Funny, I heard that some time back, some kid was booming it out over his player in his car. Some of the biggest speakers I've ever seen in the backseat! It's called I think Transgender" by a group called Crystal something or other... Crystal Castle! had to look that up, sorry.

She lives in a swamp in a hollow log
    With a one-eyed snake and a three-legged dog
She's got a bent, bony body and stringy hair
If she ever seen y'all messin' 'round there
She'd go (growl) another man done gone.

Marie Laveau by Bobby Bare---had to look that up, totally obscure to me on both accounts. one of the links I saw was in reference to a "country singer." this is apparently an old song too, early 70s, so if its country, its the "old country" so to speak...will have to hunt it up and give a listen.

ah yes, suicide is painless, but, where do we all know the song from? (that we don't know we know it!)

    here's my next one:

Don't know when I've been so blue
Don't know what's come over you
    You've found someone new and

Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue ~ Crystal Gayle an oldie but a goodie.

I was coming to the end of a long, long walk
When a man crawled out of a cardboard box
    Under the E. Street Bridge
    Followed me on to it...
