Please add T.H. Whites the Once and Future King to the list. It's the best book on King Arthur. Although it was written in 1958 so it could be to young.

What??
If this is a thread regarding good sci-fi, let me be the first to recommend Olaf Stapledon's Starmaker.
Faith is believing what you know ain't so - Mark Twain
The preachers deal with men of straw, as they are men of straw themselves - Henry David Thoreau
The way to see faith is to shut the eye of reason - Benjamin Franklin
The teaching of the church, theoretically astute, is a lie in practice and a compound of vulgar superstitions and sorcery - Leo Tolstoy
There's almost NO scifi that is old enough to be out of copyright. Only scifi precursers like Lovecraft and Poe.
...Also baby duck hat would be good for parties.
Would you consider Lovecraft as an unwilling parody of Poe?
Ningún hombre llega a ser lo que es por lo que escribe, sino por lo que lee.
- Jorge Luis Borges
I wouldn't consider Lovecraft a parody of ANYBODY. This man was freaking crazy original. He and Poe had similarities, and both were great authors, but Lovecraft really combined supernatural with extra terrestrial, which I don't think that Poe did. I could be mistaken. Care to start a compare thread in general lit?

whoa... what about War of the Worlds? isn't that on the sight?
Told by a fool, signifying nothing.
I asked you that because that's something Borges said, and surprised me. I've read Poe and Lovecraft and I can't help but feeling that those words are right, even if I don't agree with them. Your thoughts are correct, they had many similarities, but deep differences also. Despite they're good writers, they didn't amuse me much.Originally posted by IWilKikU

I forgot about HG Wells and Jules Verne. I think they're both old enough to be on here.

For those who like Poe I would recommend ETA Hoffman , one of the first to write horror stories.
