Thread: A Case of Murder by Victor Scannell?

Question A Case of Murder by Victor Scannell?

Does anyone know of this work? I heard it read on the BBC on a show where a writer talks about and reads favorite poetry. It's a short piece about a murderous cat! It's a whimsical little piece in which the word cat and a couple of rhyming words are repeated. My brief google search for the title and the author turned up nothing. I may have the surname slightly wrong...

I thought it might be appropriate for a class I teach about reading poetry aloud.

I believe you're thinking of Vernon Scannell's 'A Case of Murder', which you can find at http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-case-of-murder/. The cat is the murder-victim rather than the murderer, and I'd call it more grim than whimsical, but it's certainly a powerful piece.

yeah did it last year in a level english literature class, poetry critical analysis- wrote an essay on it as well, which should be filed somewhere

It's about the nature of guilt and confession. Scannell is an all round terrific poet. I've not read a dud one of his anyway.
