Saying rap sucks isn't a race issue at all. I'm black and say it sucks. You should be ashamed of bringing race into this. You are making a rash stereotype which offends me. I am black and don't like rap. I think that any song where the singer has to excessivly swear to get their point across is garbage. Most rap songs also have no depth to them, their is enough violence and swearing in the real world for me; i don't need to hear about it in my music. I honestly think that saying rap is bad is an attack againts black people is extremely irrational and comepletly innapropriate. I know many fellow blacks like myself that are fans of other types of music. I don't see the skill required in rap, their are no instruments being played, everything is filter in the studio for a sound that can't usually be recreated live. Saying rap sucks is not a stab against black people, you should be ashamed for degrading blacks like you did in your previous post.
again, you wrote "retards." and not all rap artists swear, fyi. and my boyfriend's brother likes classical, fyi again. his mother like's 70's music and country. my father and brother's like just about everything but metal.
regardless!:
i am not degrading black people. you need to reread my post obviously. and perhaps yours. you degraded the persons, not the music. rap artists are predominately black, and again, it was a blanket statement about the artists, not the genre. how offensive is that???
good point, crisaor.
shh!!!
the air and water have been here a long time, and they are telling stories.
No where do i refer to black people as "retards" since i am one. Saying rap sucks is not a stab at black people, saying classical sucks would not be a stab at white people. Rappers are predominately black, i will give you that, but i could care less about race i don't like the brand of music. It could be black people, white people, asians, green, etc. Race meens nothing to me i am black and have seen racism and am not a racist in anyway. Perhaps, your boyfriend is a "musician" but most rappers in my opinion aren't. This was never a race issue and i honestly don't know how you could possibly see this as a race issue.Originally Posted by amuse
I also see no skill in rap. Could you explain where the skill is? Anyone can say rhymes extremely fast. Most rappers don't write their own music which also shows a lack of skill. In other music you see instrumental skill, actual knowledge of music theory etc. I see none of this in rap. And most rappers do swear and have severely innapropriate content. Next time you are at Best Buy walk through the rap section and see how many of the cds in that section have a parental warning. When i listen to music i don't want to hear about violence, rape, and vulgar language. Are rapeprs poets? Maybe, but not musicians and not in most cases not very good poets.
Mad Season - Wake up Lryics by layne staley
Wake up young man
its time to wake up
your love affair
has got to go
for ten long years
for ten long years
the leaves to rake up
slow suicides no way to go
blue clouded grey
your not a crack up
dizzy and weakened by the haze
movin onward
so an infection not a phase
The cracks and lines
from where you gave up
they make an easy man to read
for all the times you let them bleed you
for little peace from god you plead
and beg for little peace from god you plead
wake up young man
its time to wake up
your love affair has got to go
for ten long years
for ten long years
the leaves to rake up
slow suicides no way to go
slow suicides no way to go
well, as you note, sniper you didn't bash the rap. you blanket-statment bashed the retards. and there are very few polka-dotted people making rap music.
i'm very well aware that there is a lot of swearing in rap music. i listen to it 75% of the time i'm in my bf's car. but there are, and have always been, rappers who do not swear.
maybe you don't see skill in it, but i would be hard-pressed to talk 5 miles a minute with any degree of enunciation. and i can't rhyme for crap. i think most rhymed poems suck, honestly, so given that musicians - and i do name rappers among them - can make rhymes sound Good is a very artful think, imho.
can i define skill? probably no better than anyone else, because i'd imagine it's both subjective and objective, but technical skill combined with art would be it. no i don't think chingy for example is artful. but i do think jay-z is brilliant. from what i understand he pretty much always freestyles, and has to have his stuff played back to know what he's said; i think that's extrememly innovative.
in any genre, you will have the poor, the mediocre, and the best. simply because many mediocre artists ulture get a lot of air play doesn't mean everyone in a genre is mediocre. there was a lot of crap on the radio in the 80's, but some very good stuff as well. if something doesn't strike your ears, it may simply not be for you. i personally don't like metal, but once dated a guy who did. i though slayer's line "a tourniquet around your neck" was fantastic.
shh!!!

There was a lot of truth in that post. Any rapper that freestyles and makes it sound good is skilled. I think it is a matter of taste and we shall agree to disagree.
okie dokie.

My best friend said it was about me and when I read it I thought just how someone can understand me so well it frightens me,
this is my recent favourite:
HURT by NINE INCH NAILS
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of ****
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire or dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

I hope death is joyful, and I hope I'll never return -Frida Khalo
If I seem insensitive to what you are going through, understand it's the way I am- Mr. Spock
Personally, I think that the unique and supreme delight lies in the certainty of doing 'evil'–and men and women know from birth that all pleasure lies in evil. - Baudelaire
"Evil"
I was born in the cemetery
Under the sign of the moon
Raised from my grave by the dead
I was made a mercenary
In the legions of Hell
Now I'm king of pain, I'm insane
You know my only pleasure
is to hear you cry
I'd love to hear you cry
I'd love to feel you die
And I'll be the first
To watch your funeral
and I'll be the last to leave
I'd love to hear you cry
And when you're down beyond the ground
I'll dig up your body again
And make love to shame
Oh lady cry, and say goodbye
Oh lady cry, and say goodbye
You've gotta say goodbye
'Cause I will eat your mind
Dunpeal, WOW that was a great lyric, do they have a web page with all there lyrics?
VOLCANO- by Damien Rice
Don't hold yourself like that
You'll hurt your knees
I kissed your mouth and back
But that's all I need
Don't build your world around volcanoes melt you down
What I am to you is not real
What I am to you, you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I'll ask for the sea
Don't throw yourself like that
In front of me
I kissed your mouth your back
Is that all you need?
Don't drag my love around volcanoes melt me down
What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I'll ask for what I give to you
Is just what i'm going through
This is nothing new
No no just another phase of finding what I really need
Is what makes me bleed
And like a new disease she's still too young to treat
Volcanoes melt me down
She's still too young
I kissed your mouth
You do not need me
This is the most beutyful words in a lyric I have read:
No no just another phase of finding what I really need
Is what makes me bleed
And like a new disease she's still too young to treat
I hope death is joyful, and I hope I'll never return -Frida Khalo

Damien Rice is fantastic.
Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields isn't half bad either:
PAPA WAS A RODEO
I like your twisted point of view, Mike
I like your questioning eyebrows
You've made it pretty clear what you like
It's only fair to tell you now
That I leave early in the morning
And I won't be back till next year
I see that kiss-me pucker forming
But maybe you should plug it with a beer, cause
Papa was a rodeo - Mama was a rock'n'roll band
I could play a guitar and rope a steer before I learned to stand
Home was anywhere with diesel gas - Love was a trucker's hand
Never stuck around long enough for a one night stand
Before you kiss me you should know
Papa was a rodeo
The light reflecting off the mirror ball
Looks like a thousand swirling eyes
They make me think I shouldn't be here at all
You know, every minute someone dies
What are we doing in this dive bar?
How can you live in a place like this?
Why don't you just get into my car
and I'll take you away - I'll take that kiss now, but
Papa was a rodeo...
And now it's 55 years later
We've had the romance of the century
After all these years wrestling gators
I still feel like crying when I think of what you said to me
Papa was a rodeo...
Before you kiss me you should know - Papa was a rodeo
What a coincidence, your Papa was a rodeo too!
Or, short and sweet:
RENO, DAKOTA
Reno, Dakota
There's not an iota
Of kindness in you!
You know you enthrall me
And yet you don't call me
It's making me blue;
Pantone 292.
Reno, Dakota
I'm reaching my quota
Of tears for the year
Alas and alack
You just don't call me back
You have just disappeared
It makes me drink beer.
I know you're a recluse
You know that's no excuse
To me that's just a ruse
Do not play fast and loose with my heart
Reno, Dakota
I'm no Nino Rota
I don't know the score;
Have I annoyed you
Or is there a boy who -
Well, he's just a whore
I've had him before...
It makes me drink more.
Both songs off the amazing triple album "69 Love Songs".

"The Thing That Should Not Be"
Messenger of Fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light
Hybrid children watch the sea
Pray for Father, roaming free
Fearless wretch
Insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
Great Old One
forbidden site
He searches
Hunter of the Shadows is rising
Immortal
Crawling Chaos, underground
Cult has summoned, twisted sound
Out from ruins once possessed
Fallen city, living death
Fearless Wretch
Insanity
He watches
Lurking beneath the sea
Timeless sleep
has been upset
He awakens
Hunter of the Shadows is rising
Immortal
in madness you dwell
Not dead which eternal lie
Stranger eons Death may die
Drain you of your sanity
face The Thing That Should Not Be
Fearless wretch
Insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
Great Old One
Forbidden site
He searches
Hunter of the Shadows is rising
Immortal
in madness you dwell
I've been listening to R.E.M. for quite a long time but only recently did I discover the song At My Most Beautiful. It's just great!!!!!!!!!!
At My Most Beautiful
i've found a way to make you
i've found a way
a way to make you smile
i read bad poetry
into your machine
i save your messages
just to hear your voice
you always listen carefully
to awkward rhymes
you always say your name
like i wouldn't know it's you
at your most beautiful
i've found a way to make you
i've found a way
a way to make you smile
at my most beautiful
i count your eyelashes secretly
with every one whisper i love you
i let you sleep
i know you're closed eye watching me
listening
i thought i saw a smile
i've found a way to make you
i've found a way
a way to make you smile
In dreams begin responsibilities.
Good Charlotte sucks by the way. The Weakerthans are legions better:
One Great City!:
late afternoon another day is nearly done
a darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
a thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
that hollow hurried sound of feet on polished floor
and in the dollar store the clerk is closing up
and counting loonies trying not to say
i hate winnipeg
the driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
the guess who suck, the jets were lousy anyway
the same mood every day
and in the turning lane
someone's stalled again
he's talking to himself
and hears the price of gas repeat his phrase
i hate winnipeg
up above us all,
leaning into sky
our golden business boy
will watch the north end die
and sing 'i love this town'
then let his arching wrecking ball proclaim:
"i...hate...winnipeg"
