I just found this song by Killah Priest recently, the lyrics are so fantastic... to quote him, "[he] say things that will make the picture and the paintings move."

It's about how you live when you were here,
    How you celebrated those years.
Were you a follower? Did you try elevating your peers?
Were you sincere when you gave the prophets your ears?
But soon as trouble come you disappear.
    Listen here were you real?
Did you show love that people could feel?
Did you have jealousy but keep it concealed?
Did you smile at your man's face
But all awhile wanted to take your man's place?
    Moving around like a snake.
I know you hate that term, don't call it that.
Seen that lately that's why the Priest been falling back.

All those cliques that fall apart will soon be the devil's mark.
And none the adversary will have a heart,

    Y'all read 'em and weep.
The demons that keep you from the path just laugh
That's my ink pad looks like Stained Glass.

Now see how shocking you fools if you think the Saint will lose
I say things that will make the picture and the paintings move
Now after this ink this jewel, look!

    What profits that man
Who would gain the whole world yet lose his soul?
    What profits that man?
    Somebody tell me.
    What profits that man?
    Somebody tell me.
    What profits that man
Who would fear his enemy and think he didn't exist?
    What profits that man?
    Somebody tell me.
    What profits that man?
    Somebody tell me.
    Somebody tell me.
    If you can.
    What profits that man
Who would gain the whole world but lose his soul?
    What profits that man?
    What profits that man?
    What profits that man?
The way good and evil could never balance equal,
And no man, for no man could be both good and evil.
From strings that are attached to each other,
And that string tilt to one way or the other.
Even into one grain that'll strip us,
If you've done evil, then I guess you're missing it.
It'll be the over-taker, the architecture.
What I could build will kill.
"He had a word, too. Love, he called it. But I had been used to words for a long time. I knew that that word was like the others: just a shape to fill a lack; that when the right time came, you wouldn't need a word for that any more than for pride or fear."

I've wanted to discuss some of favourite lyrics for awhile on here.

Someday Never Comes By Creedence Clearwater Revival

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_CINAyjIr0

First thing I remember was askin' papa, "Why?",
for there were many things I didn't know
And daddy always smiled; took me by the hand, sayin',
    "Someday you'll understand"
Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young,
    'cause someday never comes
Well, time and tears went by and I collected dust,
for there were many things I didn't know
When daddy went away, he said,
"Try to be a man and someday you'll understand"
Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young,
    'cause someday never comes
And then, one day in April, I wasn't even there,
for there were many things I didn't know
A son was born to me; mama held his hand, sayin',
    "Someday you'll understand"
Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young
'cause someday never comes, someday never comes
Think it was September, the year I went away,
for there were many things I didn't know
And I still see him standing, try'n' to be a man, I said,
    "Someday you'll understand"
Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young
'cause someday never comes, someday never comes

I think those lyrics are amazing. The song touches on the theme of age and wisdom. The father tells his son someday you'll understand, and it has a cyclical, full circle feeling to it. I really love this song.

When the Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9IfHDi-2EA

"And I heard as it were the noise of thunder
One of the four beasts saying come and see and I saw
    And behold a white horse"

There's a man going around taking names and he decides
Who to free and who to blame every body won't be treated
Quite the same there will be a golden ladder reaching down
    When the man comes around

The hairs on your arm will stand up at the terror in each
Sip and each sup will you partake of that last offered cup
Or disappear into the potter's ground
    When the man comes around

    [CHORUS]

Hear the trumpets hear the pipers one hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to a big kettledrum
    Voices calling and voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
Its alpha and omegas kingdom come
And the whirlwind is in the thorn trees
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn trees
It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks
Till Armageddon no shalom no shalom

Then the father hen will call his chicken's home
The wise man will bow down before the throne and at his feet
They will cast the golden crowns
    When the man comes around

Whoever is unjust let him be unjust still
Whoever is righteous let him be righteous still
Whoever is filthy let him be filthy still
Listen to the words long written down
    When the man comes around

This song is so emotionally stirring for me, and I think it's an incredible piece of song writing.

    Big Iron by Marty Robbins

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGmUsJvRv7U

To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business no one dared to make a slip
for the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip

It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came riding from the south side slowly lookin' all around
He's an outlaw loose and running came the whisper from each lip
And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip
    big iron on his hip

In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
He was vicious and a killer though a youth of twenty four
And the notches on his pistol numbered one an nineteen more
    One and nineteen more

Now the stranger started talking made it plain to folks around
Was an Arizona ranger wouldn't be too long in town
He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead
And he said it didn't matter he was after Texas Red
    After Texas Red

Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red
But the outlaw didn't worry men that tried before were dead
Twenty men had tried to take him twenty men had made a slip
Twenty one would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip

The morning passed so quickly it was time for them to meet
It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street
Folks were watching from the windows every-body held their breath
They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death
    About to meet his death

There was forty feet between them when they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather fore a bullet fairly ripped
And the ranger's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip

It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip

This song is so unbelievably awesome, I can't get enough. It's a story in song form and is very cowboy.
While the truncheon may be used
    in lieu of conversation,
words will always retain their power.
Words offer the means to meaning,
and for those who will listen,
    the enunciation of truth.

Too many to mention. Here are two of my favorites:

Mr. Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day

IMO, the most phenomenal part of this song is that it sounds like up to 4 different people are singing and yet they are all the same UNEDITED voice of Mike Patton. I view it as a drug/alcohol abuser's descent into madness. Parts of the song itself make me believe that it is the sound a brain would make as it is roasting alive.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO2bM4sgE1E

    Your lips say one thing
But the drugs they think another
    How can I massage
    This inter-galactic ulcer?

    Goodbye sober day

    Hello milky way...

Pin my ear to the wisdom post
Hang me up and drain me dry
    Mend my shipwrecked spirit
Lift the veil from my eyes

    Goodbye sober day
The years grew wings and flew away

Ghosts of the past become barbarians
    Of the future...
    And I still pity you
Because what you said was true

    Goodbye sober day
    Hello milky way...

May your sun be blown out just like a candle
May your sea burn like tar
May your sky be rolled up like a scroll
May your blue moon drip with blood

    What would they say
If you went up in smoke?
    If I dug you up
And made soup of your bones?

    Goodbye sober day
    ----------------------

Feist's version of "Now at Last"
(The song was originally performed by Blossom Dearie, but the Feist version blows Dearie's right out of the water IMHO)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmqU6WNVK5Y

This song means more to me than the performer's sad recollection of her halcyon days of youth. It suggests a tainting of innocence, a way of life that will never return, a missed connection with a friend, a funereal tribute, and simply a change of season or lost love (in the most literal sense).

    Now at last I know
    What a fool I've been
For I've lost the last love
    I shall ever win

    And at last I see
    How my heart was blind
    To the joys before me
    That I left behind

    When the wind was fresh
    On the hills
And the stars were new in the sky
And a lark was heard in the still
    Where was I
    Where was I

    When the spring is cold
    Where do robins go
    What makes winters lonely
    Now at last I know

    When the wind was fresh
    On the hills
And the stars were new in the sky
And a lark was heard in the still
    Where was I
    Where was I

    When the spring is cold
    Where do robins go
    What makes winters lonely
    Now at last I know
My hide hides the heart inside

    Hurt by Nine Inch Nails

    "Hurt"

    I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
    I focus on the pain
    The only thing that's real
    The needle tears a hole
    The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
    But I remember everything

    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know
    Goes away in the end
    You could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of ****
    Upon my liar's chair
    Full of broken thoughts
    I cannot repair
    Beneath the stains of time
    The feelings disappear
    You are someone else
    I am still right here

    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know
    Goes away in the end

    You could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt
    If I could start again
    A million miles away
    I would keep myself
    I would find a way

Blowin In The Wind by Bob Dylan

How many roads most a man walk down
Before you call him a man ?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand ?
Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly
    Before they're forever banned ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Yes, how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea ?
Yes, how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free ?
Yes, how many times can a man turn his head
Pretending he just doesn't see ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Yes, how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky ?
Yes, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry ?
Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

    Suzanne by Leonard Cohen

    "Suzanne"

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
    And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
    From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
    But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
    Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

    Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
    From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
    While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

    Creep by Radiohead

    "Creep"

    When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
    You're just like an angel
    Your skin makes me cry
    You float like a feather
    In a beautiful world
    I wish I was special
    You're so ****ing special

    But I'm a creep
    I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
    I don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts
    I want to have control
    I want a perfect body
    I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice when I'm not around
    You're so ****ing special
    I wish I was special

    But I'm a creep
    I'm a weirdo
What the hell I'm doing here?
    I don't belong here

    She's running out the door
    She's running out
    She runs runs runs

    Whatever makes you happy
    Whatever you want
    You're so ****ing special
    I wish I was special

    But I'm a creep
    I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
    I don't belong here
    I don't belong here

Tangled Up in Blue by Bob Dylan

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin',
    I was layin' in bed
Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red.
Her folks they said our lives together
    Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
    Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough.
And I was standin' on the side of the road
    Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through,
    Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
    Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.
We drove that car as far as we could
    Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
    Both agreeing it was best.
She turned around to look at me
    As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue,"
    Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much And one day the ax just fell.
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
    Right outside of Delacroix.
But all the while I was alone
    The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
    Tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
    In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
    Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
    And handed it to me
    Written by an Italian poet
    From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
    And glowed like burnin' coal
    Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
    Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs,
There was music in the cafes at night
    And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
    And froze up inside.
And when finally the bottom fell out
    I became withdrawn,
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,
    Tangled up in blue.

So now I'm goin' back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now.
    Some are mathematicians
    Some are carpenter's wives.
Don't know how it all got started,
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.
But me, I'm still on the road
    Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
    Tangled up in blue.

    I would keep myself
    I would find a way

INSANE! Darcy, this was going to be my fourth song but I thought it was too many. It's wild that you posted it. You've obviously heard the Johnny Cash version right? Which one do you like better?

Agreed this song is so haunting, so sad. The perfect words to represent a life full of regret.
While the truncheon may be used
    in lieu of conversation,
words will always retain their power.
Words offer the means to meaning,
and for those who will listen,
    the enunciation of truth.

Cool. I actually prefer the Nine Inch Nails version. The Cash one is very well done, especially the peak at end, but I find the NIN to be even more powerfully emotive.

    Eddie Vedder Long Nights

    Have no fear
    For when I'm alone
    I'll be better off
    Than I was before

    I've got this light
    I'll be around to grow
    Who I was before
    I cannot recall

    Long nights allow
    Me to feel I'm falling
    I am falling

    The lights go out
    Let me feel I'm falling
    I am falling
    safely to the ground

    I'll take this soul
    That's inside me now
    Like a brand new friend
    I'll forever know

    I've got this life
    And the will to show
    I will always be
    Better than before

    Long nights allow
    Me to feel I'm falling
    I am falling

    The lights go out
    Let me feel I'm falling
    I am falling
    safely to the ground

My fave lyrics are from ''town without pity'' by Gene Pitney

When you're young and so in love as we,
And bewildered by the world we see,
Why do people hurt us so?
Only those in love would know,
What a town without pity can do.

If we stop to gaze upon a star,
People talk about how bad we are.
Ours is not an easy age,
We're like tigers in a cage.
What a town without pity can do.

The young have problems, many problems.
    We need an understanding heart.
Why don't they help us, try to help us?
Before this clay and granite planet falls apart.

Take these eager lips and hold me fast.
I'm afraid this kind of joy can't last.
How can we keep love alive,
    How can anything survive,
When these little minds tear you in two?
What a town without pity can do....
I tend to think of myself as a natural disaster.
If you really piss me off, naturally there be a disaster ...

The Eagles- Take It To The Limit and Damien Rice's Elephant are two of many!

    "Elephant"

    This has got to die
    This has got to stop
This has got to lie down
    Someone else on top

    You can keep me pinned
    It's easier to tease
But you can't paint an elephant
    Quite as good as she

And she may cry like a baby
And she may drive me Crazy
    'Cause I am lately lonely

So why d'you have to lie?
I take it I'm your crutch
The pillow in your pillow case
    It's easier to touch

And when you think you've sinned
Do you fall upon your knees?
And do you sit within your picture?
Do you still forget the breeze?

And she may rise, if I sing you down
And she may wisely cling to the ground
    Cause I'm lately horny
So why would she take me horny?

What's the point of this song? Or even singing?
You've already gone, why am I clinging?
Well I could throw it out, and I could live without
And I could do it all for you
    I could be strong
Tell me if you want me to lie
'Cause this has got to die

    This has got to stop
This has got to lie down, down
    With someone else on top

You can both keep me pinned
    'Cause it's easier to tease
But you can't make me happy
    Quite as good as me

Well you know that's a lie

    "Take It To The Limit"

All alone at the end of the of the evening
And the bright lights have faded to blue
I was thinking 'bout a woman who might have
Loved me and I never knew
You know I've always been a dreamer
    (spent my life running 'round)
And it's so hard to change
    (Can't seem to settle down)
But the dreams I've seen lately
Keep on turning out and burning out
    And turning out the same

So put me on a highway
    And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time

You can spend all your time making money
You can spend all your love making time
If it all fell to pieces tomorrow
    Would you still be mine?

And when you're looking for your freedom
    (Nobody seems to care)
And you can't find the door
    (Can't find it anywhere)
When there's nothing to believe in
Still you're coming back, you're running back
    You're coming back for more

So put me on a highway
    And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time

    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit one more time

    Two:

    1. The Cure "Disintegration"

Oh I miss the kiss of treachery the shameless
Kiss of vanity the soft and the black and the
Velvety up tight against the side of me and
Mouth and eyes and heart all bleed and run in
Thickening streams of greed as bit by bit it
Starts the need to just let go my party piece
Oh I miss the kiss of treachery the aching kiss
Before I feed the stench of a love for a younger
Meat and the sound that it makes when it cuts
In deep the holding up on bended knees the
Addiction of duplicities as bit by bit it starts
The need to just let go my party piece

But I never said I would stay to the end so I
Leave you with babies and hoping for frequency
Screaming like this in the hope of the secrecy
Screaming me over and over and over I leave
You with photographs pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and stains on the scenery
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both us knew how the ending would
    Be

So it's all come back round to breaking apart
Again breaking apart like I'm made up of glass
Again making it up behind my back again
Holding my breath for the fear of sleep again
Holding it up behind my head again cut in deep
To the heart of the bone again round and round
And round and it's coming apart again over and
    Over and over

Now that I know that I'm breaking to pieces
I'll Pull out my heart and I'll feed it to anyone
    Crying for sympathy
Crocodile cry for the love of the crowd and the three cheers from everyone
Dropping through sky through the glass of the roof through the roof of your mouth
Through the mouth of your eye through the eye
Of the needle it's easier for me to get closer to
Heaven than ever feel whole again

I never said I would stay to the end I knew
I would leave you with babies and everything
Screaming like this in the hole of sincerity
Screaming me over and over and over I leave
You with photographs pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and stains on the memory
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams when
Both of us knew how the end always is

    How the end always is

    2. The Triffids "Stolen Property"

There's someone standing in the rain like they have no place
    to go
Maybe that someone is you, maybe someone you don't aim to know
    Maybe lost possessions
    Maybe stolen property
You just lie around waiting on a signal from heaven
Never had to heal any deep incision
Darling you are not moving any mountains
You are not seeing any visions
You are not freeing any people from prison
Just an aphorism for every occasion
As if the only thing that ever matters
is your place at the table
You never read the writing on the label
when you drank from the bottle
it said Keep Away From Children
This is stolen property, this is stolen property

    Let her run away
Let her run, let her run away
She can't hurt you now, can't hurt you now
She don't belong any more, learn the hard way
    She don't belong here anymore
    Finders keepers, losers weepers
    Finders keepers, losers weepers
This is stolen property, this is stolen property

Reach out in the darkness now she's not there
Reach out it's getting darker now she's not there
Reach out it's getting darker now
She don't belong anymore, learn this the hard way
She don't belong here any more
    You stumble, sometimes fall
Pick yourself up! Hold yourself up to the light!
Duck your head ! Watch for the blade!
Can't hurt you now, can't hurt you now
    This is stolen property
    This is stolen property
    This is stolen property
    This is stolen property

"Start of Time" - Gabrielle Aplin
Oh, today I'm just a drop of water
And I'm running down the mountain side
Come tomorrow I'll be in the ocean
I'll be rising with the morning tide
    --
I'm an atom in a sea of nothing
    Looking for another to combine
Maybe we could be the start of something
Be together at the start of time

"Turning Page" - Sleeping At Last
You're love is my turning page
    Only the sweetest words remain
Every kiss is a cursive line
Every touch is a redefining phrase

"Sky Holds the Sun" - the Bees
I wanna hold you like the sky holds the sun

"Here Comes Your Ride" - Holidays On Ice
    Been here so long
Guess I'll be here a little longer

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" - Joy Division (listen to the cover by Broken Social Scene)(it sucks but it's more low-fi)
    When routine bites hard
    And ambitions are low
    And resentment rides high
    But emotions won't grow

Sorry for lyric mess ups. These songs are so beautiful though.

update: i won't lyric it but "Burn" by Ray LayMontagne

"I go to sleep alone, and wake up alone. I take walks. I work until I'm tired. I watch the wind play with the trash that's been under the snow all winter. Everything seems simple until you think about it. Why is love intensified by abscence?” ― Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler's Wife
