    "Memory" -- Sugarcult

    this may never start
    we could fall apart
    and not be your memory
    lost your sense of fear
    feelings insincere
    can now be your memory

    so get back back
    back to where we lasted
    just like i imagine
i could never feel this way
    so get back back
    back to the disaster
    my heart's beating faster
holding on to feel the same

    this may never start
    i'll tear us apart
    could now be your enemy
    losing half our years
    waiting for you here
    i'd be your anything
    so get back back
    back to where we lasted
    just like i imagine
i could never feel this way
    so get back back
    back to the disaster
    my heart's beating faster
holding on to feel the same

    this could never start
    tearing out my heart
    and id be your memory
    lost your sense of fear
    feelings disappear
    can not be your memory

    so get back back
    back to where we lasted
    just like i imagine
i could never feel this way
    so get back back
    back to the disaster
    my heart's beating faster
holding on to feel the same

    this could never start
    we could fall apart
    and id be your memory
    lost your sense of fear
    feelings insincere
    can not be your memory
    can not be your memory
    You're just another bastard.

The Offspring's "Gone Away" is a very heartwrenching song about true morning - sometimes I wish they put the amount of effort into their other songs that they put into this one, because I think it's an example of good songwriting. The lyrics aren't so much eloquent or descriptive as they are just raw feeling, and while they may seem plain on paper, when sung with the music, the song is really emotional:

    Maybe in another life
    I could find you there
    Pulled away before your time
    I can't deal
    it's so unfair

    And it feels
    And it feels like
    Heaven's so far away
    And it feels
    Yeah it feels like
    The world has grown cold
    Now that you've gone away

    Leaving flowers on your grave
    Show that I still care
But black roses and Hail Mary's
Can't bring back what's taken from me

    I reach to the sky
    And call out your name
    And if I could trade
    I would

    And it feels
    And it feels like
    Heaven's so far away
    And it stings
    Yeah it stings now
    The world is so cold
    Now that you've gone away

    I reach to the sky
    And call out your name
    oh please let me trade
    I would

    And it feels
    And it feels like
    Heaven's so far away
    And it feels
    Yeah it feels like
    The world has grown cold
    Now that you've gone away
    Gone away....

And I agree, Tool's music is pure poetry.

I've been looking for the lyrics to the Decemberists' "The Tain" -- one song in parts, [loosely] based on the Cattle Raid of Cooley legend, -- but I can't find them anywhere. It's really poetic and haunting. I'd like to put them here. If anyone has the EP or knows of a site with the lyrics, I'd appreciate it.

    Here:

    Part I
    Here upon this pillow
    Made of reed and willow
    You’re a fickle little twister
Are you sweet on your sister?
Your fallow won’t leave you alone.

    And granted for their pleasure
    Possessions laid to measure
    She’s a salty little pisser
With your c*** in her kisser
But now she’s a will of her own.

    Part II
Damn your ankles and eyes wide
From your Fingernails to your Ponytails too.
King of the Insects and the M-5
Over Charlemagne in a motorcade too.

And baby needs a new prize
Baby needs a new and shiny prize.

    In this place called Heavenly
    You were born here.
    This place called Heavenly
    You were born here.
    You were born here.

And now all the marchers descend from high
I will dedicate all of my awakenings to this.

And damn all the angles that oppress my sight
I will bleed your heart through a samovar soon.

    In this place called Heavenly
    You were born here.
    This place called Heavenly
    You were born here.
    You were born here

    Part III
They settled dust in your hair
To watch you shake and shout it out
    With our armaments bared
We shed our bags and travel alls.

From the lee of the wall
He comes in chain and chariot
And all his eunuchs in thrall
Can scarce lift his line and lariat.

    Here come loose the hounds
    To blow me down.
    Blow me down.
    On this stretch of ground
    I’ll lay me down.
    Lay me down.
    To Sleep.

    And now stricken with pangs
That tear at our backs like thistledown
    The mirror’s soft silver tain
    Reflects our last birthing hour.

Here come loose the hounds to blow me down
    Blow me down.
    On this stretch of ground
    I’ll lay me down
    Lay me down.
    To Sleep.

    Part IV
O the Wind is blowing, it hurts your skin
As you climb up hillside, forest and fen.

Your arms full of lullabies, orchids and wine
Your memories wrapped within paper and twine.

The room that you lie in is dusty and hard
Sleeping soft Babies on piles of yards
Of gingham, taffeta, cotton and silk
Your dry hungry mouths cry for your mother’s milk.

When the dawn comes to greet you, you’ll rise with clothes on
And advance with the others, singing old songs
Of cattle and maidens and withered old queens.
Let the music carry you on.

The room that you lie in is dusty and hard
Sleeping soft Babies on piles of yards
Of gingham, taffeta, cotton and silk
Your dry hungry mouths cry for your mother’s milk.

    Part V
Darling dear, what have you done?
Your clothes are torn, your makeup runs.

I ran through brambles, blooming thistle
I washed my face in the river when you whistled me on.

Darling dear, what have you done?
Your hands and face are smeared with blood.

The chaplain came and called me out
To beat and to butcher his mother’s sow.

But darling dear, they found him dead
    This morning by the riverbed.

But hush now darling, don’t you cry.
Your reward’s in the sweet by-and-by.
Hush now baby, don’t you cry.
Your reward’s in the sweet by-and-by.

And now we’ve seen your powers
    Softly stretch the hours
    You’re a fickle little twister
Are you sweet on your sister?
As now you go wandering home.

I really liked Alices resturant - Heres another song of Alice, by Tom Waits .
(BTw - what was the Cattle raid of Cooley?)
I will only put in two of the verses of the Alice song:

    Arithmetic arithmetock
Turn the hands back on the clock
How does the ocean rock the boat?
How did the razor find my throat?
The only strings that hold me here
Are tangled up around the pier

    And so a secret kiss
    Brings madness with the bliss
And I will think of this
When I'm dead in my grave
Set me adrift and I'm lost over there
    And I must be insane
To go skating on your name
    And by tracing it twice
    I fell through the ice
    Of Alice

My favorite song by Waits is Clap hands:

Sane, sane, they're all insane, fireman's blind, the conductor is lame
    A Cincinnati jacket and a sad-luck dame
Hanging out the window with a bottle full of rain
Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands

Said roar, roar, the thunder and the roar
Son of a ***** is never coming back here no more
The moon in the window and a bird on the pole
We can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal
Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands

Said steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams
Going up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
    A fifty-dollar bill inside a palladin's hat
And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at

Roar, roar, the thunder and the roar
Son of a ***** is never coming back here no more
Moon in the window and a bird on the pole
Can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal
Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands

I said steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams
Going up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
    A fifty-dollar bill inside a palladin's hat
And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at

    Shine, shine, a Roosevelt dime
All the way to Baltimore and running out of time
Salvation Army seemed to wind up in the hole
They all went to heaven in a little row boat
Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands
    "Man was made for joy and woe;
And when this we rightly know
Through the world we safely go" Blake

That last one is amazing! I love it.

The Cattle Raid of Cooley (Táin Bó Cúailnge) is an old Irish epic. The full text is readily available, but it's really, really long so I haven't read it. The gist of it is that a person from one kingdom slaughters the prized bull of another kingdom, Ulster, and a huge war breaks out and lots of people die.
If you had to live with this you'd rather lie than fall.

    Death or Glory

Running Wild - "Riding the Storm"

Breaking the waves, a ride on the wild raging sea
Playing with fortune, oh, what a lust to be free
Flashlights and thunder, the pattering rain on the hull
From a stormy horizon we get our course
    The cry of freedom

    chorus:
Face in the wind, we're riding the storm
We'll stay our course whatever will come
Wandering souls in the sea of the damned
    Death or glory
    we're riding the storm

Cracks in the planks, the rigging upwards and down
Staggering masts, the pounding splash of the prow
The wind in our sails, our flag flies high on the top
From a stormy horizon we get our course
    The cry of freedom

    Thumbs up

    This one couldn't be missing.

    Led Zepelin
    Stairway to Heaven

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
    It makes me wonder,
    It makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
    It makes me wonder,
    It really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
    And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How ev'rything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

Love that song - I actually have a very good cover by Dolly Parton !

    One of my favorite songs

    One by U2

    Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
    You got someone to blame
    You say...

    One love
    One life
    When it's one need
    In the night
    One love
    We get to share it
    Leaves you baby if you
    Don't care for it

    Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
    Well it's...

    Too late
    Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
    We get to
    Carry each other
    Carry each other
    One...

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come tor raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

    Did I ask too much
    More than a lot
    You gave me nothing
    Now it's all I got
    We're one
    But we're not the same
    Well we
    Hurt each other
    Then we do it again
    You say
    Love is a temple
    Love a higher law
    Love is a temple
    Love the higher law
    You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
    To what you got
When all you got is hurt

    One love
    One blood
    One life
You got to do what you should
    One life
    With each other
    Sisters
    Brothers
    One life
    But we're not the same
    We get to
    Carry each other
    Carry each other

    One...life

    One

I'm glad you like it amuse.

    Isagel, that's a good one.

    Here's another memorable one:

    Pink Floyd
    Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell
    Heaven from Hell,
    Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
    From a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
    Your heros for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
    We're just two lost souls
    Swimming in a fish bowl,
    Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found?
    The same old fears.
    Wish you were here.

I love Pink Floyd and the Led Zeppelin song too. My favourite Pink Floyd album is A Momentary Lapse of Reason, followed closely by the The Wall. It's hard to choose a favourite when they are all such great songs. This is - On the Turning Away

    On the turning away
    From the pale and downtrodden
    And the words they say
    Which we won't understand
    'Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
    The turning away.'

    Its a sin that somehow
    Light is changing to shadow
    And casting it's shroud
    Over all we have known
Unaware how the rank have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud.

On the winds of the night
    As the daytime is stirring
    Where the speechless unite
    In a silent acord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the winds of the night.

    No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
    No more turning away
    From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just so stand and stare
Is is only a dream that there'll be
    No more turning away.

"Typical Situation" by Dave Matthews Band

    Ten fingers we have each
Nine planets around the sun repeat
Eight ball is the last if you triumphant be
Seven oceans pummel the shores of the sea

    It's a typical situation
    In these typical times
    Too many choices

    Everybody's happy
    Everybody's free
We'll keep the big door open
    And everyone'll come around
    Why are you different
    Why are you that way
If you don't step in line
    We'll lock you away

    Six senses keeping
Five around a sense of self
Four seasons turn on and turn off
I can see three corners from this corner
    Two is a perfect number
    But one

    Everybody's happy
    Everybody's free
We'll keep the big door open
    And everyone'll come around
    Why are you different
    Why are you that way
If you don't step in line
    We'll lock you away

    It's a typical situation
    In these typical times
We can't do a thing about it

"The Battle of Evermore" by Led Zeppelin

Queen of Light took her bow and then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom, and walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight and time will tell us all

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe
Rest not to lock your homes.

Side by side we wait the might of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder down in the valley below,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, waiting for the eastern glow

The apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care
Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light

The apples turn to brown and black
    The tyrant's face is red.

Oh the war is common cry, pick up you swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad that mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long the beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall, the ringwraiths ride in black
    Ride on

Sing as you raise your bow, shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night that lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light.
The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back
    Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining, the clouds of blue roll by,
with flames from the dragon of darkness, the sunlight blinds his eyes.
