Tragedy of Life
I watched you die a thousand times
before there was a you and I,
I would see your eyes
staring back at me through their faces
with every new tragedy.
I can only marvel at fortune's fate
which against insurmountable odds
led you to find your way to me,
for across distances of space,
my heart called out to yours,
but then we were only children
floundering our way through the world.
And yet death still lingers too close
for comfort, I can see its stalking shadow
where others pass innocently by
never suspecting, but we have both known
too much of pain and violence,
we have both stood on the precipice
staring death in the face
ready to accept his outstretched hand.
Now there is nothing I can do
but hold on as tight as I can
and be thankful for your every breath,
inhale your every word,
I can take no single touch,
for granted, but your life is a celebrating
every morning we both wake up.
