The Story of the Goblins who Stole a Sexton

    Hi,
I have just translated it into Hungarian, but I can't make out the proper meaning of the last sentence. Isn't it ... bad? I understand that there is something to do with spirits as alcoholic drink and spirits as ghosts. So, could you explain it to me, like to a child? My English is poor, my Hung a bit better, I hope it'd be a good transation. Maybe, I'll have other questions later.

    the sentence is the following:
if a man turn sulky and drink by himself at Christmas time, he may make up his mind to be not a bit the better for it: let the spirits be never so good, or let them be even as many degrees beyond proof, as those which Gabriel Grub saw in the goblin's cavern.'
