    Tweaking the Pope's Nose

I studied a book in university about a fellow who entered into a deal with the devil that would give him God-like powers. However, he simply used his powers to do simple parlour tricks, like tweaking the Pope's nose. For the life of me I cannot recall the title of the title of the book or the author. Can anyone help?

One memorable quote I remember from the book is a demon lamenting that "Hell is wherever God is not".
