Northern: While I can’t claim that the story is without flaws, I would recommend it without reservation to anyone who is a fan of classic literature. I think that the beauty of the story lies in Gaskell’s skillful treatment of subject matter, in bringing a situation to life and showing the many-sided and complicated way that people of different backgrounds and temperaments interact for the common good.
Have you read any of her other novels? Wives and Daughters perhaps?
