I hated this book at first. Now I am admiring it! I wouldn't have read it had it not been assigned. There is no end to the interpretations James alludes to. What about the obvious solution... Mrs. Grose is the evil one! By whatever means she has victimized the governess. Without her there is no reason to think that the apparitions are Quint and Jessel. She is trying to get rid of the governess... like she did the last one! Untill I read this explanation I was searching for some solution to the problem, now I see it is elementary, my dear Watson! One thing Mrs. Grose was not hoping for was the death of Master Miles... was he strangled or frightened to death?
