We just returned yesterday from a trip to Iceland and we journeyed to the Snaeffelsnes Peninsula to the site of Journey to the Center of the Earth. While we did not go to the top of Snaeffels (it was cold and windy), we did do a hike across the lava fields described by Verne. It was an incredible trip. We were very surprised to find that the town of Budir is no longer in existence, except for a hotel (open only on weekends this time of year) and a small church. On our hike, a few kilometers from Budir, we found Budahellir Cave and did our own journey underground into a lava tube. I can see why Jules Verne chose this landscape for the book. You feel like you are watching the earth being formed before your very eyes.
