    lol...

A small group of poets meets in our Gold Country library the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month to discuss, read, and write poetry. One of our challenges is a "Word Can" poem... a word is pulled out of the can by each participant and we have a few minutes to come up with a poem/(or not) that we share with each other when all are done. Our most recent challenge included the words:

    matter/fuselage/remote/cottage/perspire

There were some wonderful creations by our small group - mine more mundane but I will share:

    A Sight Rhyme

    Would fuselage rhyme with cottage
in a perfect world I pondered
I check my poetry app with eagerness,
    no need to perspire
    But does it really matter
with all the time in the world
when one lives simply in the comforts
    of a remote home

    1/20/2022

Your challenge is to write a poem with these same 5-words (above).

I hope to return with a new list of words from our Word Can from our next meeting as well as my new impromptu attempt

    Word Can poem

One of my recent Word Can challenge attempts:
    (mince/township/quirky/destiny/jam)

"The Township Faire's Mince Jam Confiddle"

'twas the destiny of our township faire
as quirky as the town's folke are around hyar
to have a five way tie in the mince jam category
    turned into one hullabaloo
    - I tell you, yes sirree...
To break the tie the five finalist got thunkin'
to shoot at the township faire's prize winnin' pumpkin
The closest to the mark smack dab in the middle
would solve this mince jam confiddle
So who'd a thunk when the first up to shoot
shot a skunk and we all had to skid-diddle

    ... Challenge continues

My latest Word Can poem from 6/16/2022: people/viewpoint/trillion/paralyze/thinkers

    simply write a poem

    the viewpoint of a trillion
    thinkers paralyzes my soul -
I would rather step back from
    the nuances that permeate the
ordinary and simply write a poem

    6/16/2022

The challenge is yours; as per the rules of our group I had about 10-minutes to write something... you have until I post my next poem

Well, this is a summons indeed!

    people/viewpoint/trillion/paralyze/thinkers

    Question

    The viewpoint
    The view
    The point
    The viewpoint
    The viewpoint of
    The people
    The viewpoint of people

    A million
    A billion
    A trillion

    A million people
    A billion people
    A trillion people

    A thinker
    A million thinkers
    A billion thinkers
    A trillion thinkers

Do a trillion viewpoints paralyze thinking?

I like your poem Reminded me of a sci-fi short story where there was a sentence passed down to a person proved guilty of a heinous crime who was subjected to a mass public psychic hating.

Thanx for kicking off the responses !

Thanx ! It was an attempt at vernacular poetry on the spur of the moment. A poet you and I recently encountered, in the "First Line Poetry" thread I believe, used vernacular poetry to great effect and fame (I think he was from Indiana). I've used the vernacular device only a few times - this recent poem of mine becoming one of my favorites.

re1:The poet is James W. Riley. I liked how you created a sort of Dickensian comic situation and adapted it to the slang with wordplay and all.

re 2: Lol! Didnīt intend anything so drastic. I saw something like this somewhere, maybe it was a concrete German poem. I wanted to slowly build up the meaning of the poem by emphasizing the smaller elements and then question it. But I had to make some changes.

    unicorn/multitude/dream/skating/yellow

a plush unicorn dreams of forest hills
gamboling with a multitude of fauns
a lazy yellow sun beaming before them

nearby on a table a snow globe at rest -
a snowman skating a lasting pirouette
with his red hat and green scarf askew

    Enjoyed this nursery poem.
Not quite sure about the rules. Same challenge?

    unicorn/multitude/dream/skating/yellow

    A yellow unicorn
    dreams a dream:
    A multitude of frogs
    are skating on the seam
    of a stream.
    The dream is green.

Suggesting a new rule. Each player creates a new challenge for the next player.

    Next challenge: skyrocket/ moon/ surfing/teacup/ambling

Love it... staying with the dream:

this might be the night ... skyrocket/moon/surfing/teacup/ambling

    ambling at dawn within
    a surfing dream -
my heart languishing in a teacup
    thinking of the past
    with the moon over my
    shoulder - soon the pyrotechnics
    will soar from
    cannonades reporting as each
    skyrocket takes flight -
    this might be the night

    Next: stormy/gladness/questions/secrets/button
