    Favourites by Period and Category

    Hi,

This thread is meant to browse through the history of literature by letting forum members make their list of favourite literary works by period and genre. I would like to start with novels before 1800. So what are your favourite novels (or novellas) published before 1800? These are mine:

    1. Jonathan Swift - Gulliver's Travels (1726)
    2. Daniel Defoe - Robinson Crusoë (1719)
    3. Miguel de Cervantes - Don Quixote (1605)
    4. Voltaire - Candide (1759)
    5. Oliver Goldsmith - The Vicar of Wakefield (1766)
    6. Henry Fielding - Tom Jones (1749)
    7. Pierre Choderlos de Laclos - Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782)
    8. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774)
    9. Betje Wolff & Aagje Deken - Sara Burgerhart (1782)

I think these are all the C18th books that I have read. I liked Tom Jones a lot.

The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling - Henry Fielding (1749)
The Travels of Humphrey Clinker - Tobias Smollet (1771)
Robinson Crusoe - Daniel Defoe (1719)
    Gulliver's Travels - Jonathan Swift (1726)
The Monk - Matthew Lewis (1796)
According to Aldous Huxley, D.H. Lawrence once said that Balzac was 'a gigantic dwarf', and in a sense the same is true of Dickens.
    Charles Dickens, by George Orwell

    Tristram Shandy - Laurence Sterne
    Oroonoko - Aphra Benn
Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire - Gibbon ( a "must-read" for its language as much as its history.)
    Voices mysterious far and near,
Sound of the wind and sound of the sea,
Are calling and whispering in my ear,
    Whifflingpin! Why stayest thou here?

I liked Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, Emma and The Count of Monte Cristo. I have read Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre Sense and Sensibility, Norhanger Abbey and Frankenstein, but I did not like them so much. The only book from early 19th century I have read not in wordeater's list is Confessions of an English Opium Eater, which was good in places.

Novels of the second half of the 19th century (keep in mind I haven't read that many):

    -Moby-Dick
-War and Peace (I would put this as #1 probably, although M-D is amazing, but I only got to about page 900 or so, and unfortunately never finished it)
    -Picture of Dorian Gray
    -Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
    -Notes from Underground

That unfortunately might be it for me in terms of novels from that period I've read and liked. Really want to read Crime and Punishment/Brothers Karamazov, Anna Karenina (and to finish W&P), some Henry James, Dickens, and Middlemarch!
