Really?! Ham and pineapple is as British as fish and chips. Try it, a pineapple chunk on a cocktail stick, with an equal square of ham is the usual way of indulging.
We love it! Especially the war scenes. Olivier's 1944 film version was designed as a morale booster for Britain during WWII; it succeeded in this, as well as being a great work of art. I wonder what...
New game: mention works of literature that include astronomical phenomena and other astronomical matters. I'll start
Northern Lights in Knausgaards's "Dancing in the Dark". (He's also relates how...
I just finished this a few days ago and didn't like it. It was a totally humourless slog, with a "hardly anything happens" plot. I was very disappointed because An Artist of the Floating World is one...

Objective correlative?
T.S. Eliot:
“ The only way of expressing emotion in the form of art is by finding an "objective correlative"; in other words, a set of objects, a situation, a chain of...

Easier to say which might be the first to be dropped from the canon :)

Gangster
Good advice. I bought it at a remaindered book store, read the first ten pages, then gave up. I found it dull, complicated, and not entertaining.
RIP Terry. His comic novels are great light relief after trying to tackle some of that serious literary stuff.
I agree with Jonathan B - that's the edition I own. I would get the hardcover version (the version Jonathan links to...) It's nicely produced and should last a lifetime.
Probably my favourite book as well. There are lot of characters, but Dickens makes them so vivid that they stick in the memory, and one wouldn't be without any of them.
Hamlet, the scene where Polonius is sending someone to spy on his son to make sure he keeps to the straight and narrow in Paris, and Ophelia expresses anxiety that Hamlet has gone barmy because she...
