Well, I do take breaks from him, because at times he's so viciously bleak that I need to come up for air.
Haven't got that far yet. I'm close to the 50% mark though.
And definitely like some better than others.
The secret agent affected me pretty strongly. First time I cried reading a book.

What author would you recommend once I finish all of Joseph Conrad's works?
I love Conrad not necessarily because of his themes, but instead because of his language, and 'atmosphere'.
Who would...
Thanks folks. That will get me going.
When it comes to movies I like my westerns to be gritty, dirty, realistic and unromantic.
I'm presuming/hoping that there are books in the same vein.
Suggestions? And older books even better...
You guys rock.
I've got a bunch of authors to explore now. Suprisingly though (for me) I've read quite a few of the book suggestions.
Keep 'em coming.
Gonna get an e-reader soon and hope to be...
I'm starting to burn myself out for a while on 19th century literature.
The thing is I wan't to read intelligent books with depth, not fluffy 'popular' fiction. Though I occaisionally enjoy engaging...
Those lists are awesome. You rock!
So, I'm about 10 pages from finishing Ashenden. Its a quirky book. The first 3/4 is very much about spy work, and is narrated in a very detached 'male' fashion , but starting halfway through and...
I'm now reading Ashenden by Maughm, and I absolutely LOVE it.
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks so much everyone.
Thanks folks. My list is growing.
(BTW just started Prester John by Buchan. Rousing good stuff!)
Awesome.
Ive read a few Tarzan's and love the language.
I will most definitely be pursuing some of the other ones you mentioned at the used bookstore tonight.
Thanks so much.

Turn of the century era.
Spy or adventure type stuff. Sea faring good too!

I think there is a difference between saying you don't like a book, and saying you shouldn't like a book. That's what elitism is. The crack about Stephen King and Starbucks carries that connotation. ...
Bed, couch, bus.
This thread is quickly dying but I'll try to keep it alive a little longer.
Suppose there is a number scale where 1 is the most basic straigtforward book. A story, lacking in any particular...
2 things.
1. Having seen the repsonses, I am generally pleased. There seem to be a great many 'liberal' readers here, and that's good enough for me to want to hang around. (as if me hanging around...
I read recently on these forums someone say something to the effect of
"You don't like such-and-such a book, which is a 'classic', why are you on this forum, you should be hanging out at strarbucks...
As someone who is terrible at catching symbols and metaphors and certainly 'deeper meanings', I have worked long and hard to 'let go' of my guilt about not understanding a book as fully as it might...
Canadian beer Rocks!
(Canadian books too  )
Pleasant and cool!
I like to read a lot even though I'm terrible at recognizing deeper meanings or symbolism or metaphor etc. haha.
My tastes are 'somewhat' varied. I like beat generation writers. I'm quite fond of...
