Hello to everyone!
T.S.Eliot's modernist classic "The Wasteland" was published in 1922, and celebrates its centenary this year. That same year the Ulysses was published by Sylvia Beach in Paris.
Both are tricky,...
I hope you are recovered. LitNet has not.
In honor of Lake Superior State University, I nominate "Lake Superior". Having grown up near the shores of Lake Michigan, I'd like to point out that...
One problem for me is that some of the forums take forever to load. The "General Lit" forum still works well, but this one takes five minutes to load, so I rarely bother with it.
Good to hear...
Aestheticism referred to the notion that the pursuit of beauty was the appropriate goal of art. Wilde (I think -- I'm not an expert, but I've read his stories) thought that Christian love ("agape")...
Even Wolf supports "censorship", apparently. He differs from the "woke" community that rails against "Mulberry Street" only in terms of what books he'd like to see banned (although they probably...
I agree -- that's why I object to applying the word "censorship" to what's happening. One problem with the "cancel culture" is that it has romnanticized victimhood. When Oprah sighs and empathizes...
The so-called "cancel culture" is concerning, of course. But Wolf's calumnies about the USA are asinine. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech here in the U.S. -- its protection is...
Dr. Seuss is a talented author and artist. Of the books that will no longer be published, the only one I know well is "To Think that I Saw it on Mulberry Street". My grandmother had a copy when I...
On Ferlenghetti's 100th birthday I posted the following poem. Today I'm thinking that the days won't be quite so fine anymore.
Recipe For Happiness Khaborovsk Or Anyplace

Lawrence Ferlinghetti died, at age 101.
I am leading a quiet life
in Mike’s Place every day
watching the champs
of the Dante Billiard Parlor
and the French pinball addicts.
I am leading a...
Saint Paul admonishes the Corinthians that, “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

Four of Austen's heroine's have to disabuse themselves of their incorrect perceptions: Elizabeth, Catherine, Marianne and Emma. Fanny is an anti-heroine, steadfastly refusing to go out into the...
Roger Scatcherd did use a weapon. It's unclear whether it was a club or a stone (Roger himself didn't remember, because he was drunk).
I agree (of course) not that it was a "Sham marriage", but...
I appear to be talking to myself, but Kev has aroused my interest. Why (I wonder) does Trollope have his romantic lead horse whip someone? Why does Roger Scatcherd do the same (and worse)? What is...
Frank Gresham's horse whipping Mr. Moffat is structurally necessary to the novel. It is compared to the seminal event of the novel: Roger Scatcherd's killing of Dr. Thorne's brother and Mary...
Frank Gresham doubtless thought he was defending his sister's honor and punishing Moffat's perfidy in what was then a culturally accepted manner. Of course we now think that his behavior is criminal...
I read a couple of reviews of the movie (I haven't seen it), which found it mediocre. In the novel, Kristin does defy her father's wishes to marry Erland instead of Simon. However, both Lavran and...
Surely you don't think horse whips should be used to beat horses? The poor beasts have done nothing wrong!
Col. Brandon fights a duel with Willoughby, because he has seduced and abandoned...
Sigrid Undset is not widely read anymore outside of Norway. That's a shame. "Kristin Lavransdatter" is a truly great novel. Kristin tries to be a devout Christian -- but her earthy loves -- for...
Sportscasters love saying, "This team controls its own destiny." (This means if they win all their games they can reap some benefit regardless of what other teams do.)
News flash! You can't...
My favorite Wellington story (I forget where I read it): Besmirched with mud, Wellington and an aide were returning to camp after surveying the enemy lines. Just then, a company of new recruits...
I've been watching Carlos Saura's three great Flamenco movies (from the 1980s): Carmen, El Amor Brujo (Love the Magician), and Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding). These are among the best dance movies...
On the anniversary of Kobe Bryant's death, one ESPN announcer solemnly intoned, “We all remember where we were when we heard about Kobe's tragic death...” Huh? No we don't. America's favorite...
To those who are interested I recommend the Yale Open Courses. There are four in English Lit: Milton, Modern Poetry, Literary Theory, and the Novel since 1945. Here's a link: ...
