    Happy Birthday to you !

Yeah, I'm just looking for one for my own personal interest. I've read 'As You Like it' and 'Anthony and Cleopatra' so far and I think the way Shakespeare uses language is just sublime (I guess I'm not the only one, lol). I keep getting an irresistible urge to read Macbeth at the moment, for some reason, so thought I would invest in a complete collection. Thanks for your offer of help; I might have to take you up some time because, even with the explanatory notes, I'm still slightly bemused sometimes. Being a scholar in Renaissance literature, I guess you're the best person to ask for advice

Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for your informative post on the Shakespeare thread. I had been confused about all the different versions; first folios and such and your post cleared that up for me and was interesting to read. Thanks again.

part 3....I called my little rock muscian tonight and she attempted a conversation on the phone. Of course, she much preferred to play with the buttons. However, everytime her mother would try to retrieve the phone she would say "no...mine"...my daughter-in-law was laughing. I said already they rebell. I asked her about Melmo (Elmo) and she said Nemo. She had just seen the movie and loved it. What kid wouldn't love a little orange stripped fish? Then over the phone, we sang together "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"...empatically she kept repeating "up above'...she is really something. My son told me she sees my photo now and says Mum Mum...of course, that melted my heart. Actually, she has a toy piano and loves it. Did you see the video of her playing it. If not I will enclose the link in your mail.

part 2...Spenser might be like Benedick in "Much Ado.." railing against Beatrice.....don't tell Papagena though. Then again, isn't it Papageno who Papagena falls for?

The trip sounds like heaven. Ours was wonderful...I loved the Hearst Castle and the view from up there; I also loved Santa Barbara, etc. The PCH is amazingly beautiful. I did later make up to Washington and the Olympic Peninsula; loved Rialto Beach with the seastakes. I have found memories of all. Yosemite is heaven on earth! I am not sure how I feel about staying on the rim of the Grand Cayon. That might make me nervous. I saw this walkway online and it goes out from the canyon wall...made of steal...I frightened me to death. I guess I am queezy about heights.

I found that bees-knees article real interesting. I also liked the Bee Jackson origin. It would see that might be the feasible explanation; unless the saying goes further back than that - say we find it in Shakespeare's work - wouldn't that be a shocker! The other expression "cat's pajamas" was in the same Ken B movie, too. This little girl, tells him some kid in her class is the "cat's pajamas"; before that his manager was criticising his play, saying these old expressions were no longer used today. How wrong he was!

Keep the warrior; she's so cute; love pencil drawnings; she fits your profile page. Humm, I'm not sure what to be next. Ah...good to know of the longest poem in English; that means I will never read it; my attention span still can't last past one page of stanzas. Love the Spencer Tracey/Kate Hepburn movies I've been watching this week; "Adam's Rib" and "Women of the Year" were so entertaining; such perfect chemistry.

Part II reply...the Grand Canyon will be great even if it's your second time. My son has been with his wife. They have great photos. That road trip sounded so cool. My mother and I took one up Pacific Coast Hwy...Parlor Car bus tour. We actually got the best views sitting up high; stopped along at many key spots and onto Yosemite, then SF; it was well worth the money. I bet your brother is excited; what a great graduation gift. Ah...how sweet of you to send me another postcard.

Yes, Brooke seems very musically inclined. They used to dance around with her when she was really young and wouldn't quiet down; she loved it. She is very inquistive; so I think the music intrigues her. She received a one man band set from a learning store. Remember those little triangles they would have in grade school? She has one and loves it. She is a riot when she tries to sing; it is actually in-tune, but you can only catch a few of the words. Yeah, perhaps.... a rock musican...eeek....

I still have that avy as I see you have yours, too. I am too lazy to change it today and I sort of like being WW! haha. Wow, is Spenser named after the actor Spencer Tracy, although it's not spelled the same way. I thought of that since I have been watching his and Hepburn's movies this week...what great and funny classics. How funny, so little Spenser got a bit spoiled while you were away, being 'grand bird'..that's a riot. Your mom should carry around a grandma brag book with his photos in it! Cool name, Papagena, "from The Magic Flute." I haven't encountered "bee's knees" since I heard it mentioned in a Kenneth Branagh movie, "How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog"(not exactly about killing a dog). Where exactly did that saying originate, do you know? British or American? I think it's so funny. Anyway, it sounded so cute to observe Spenser and Papagena's behavorial...wonder if he really loves her...typical male 'unatainable' attitude! Poor little Pagagena...

part 2..Ah...glad you saw my granddaughter, thanks. I thought her Christmas Eve hairdo was a riot. She's got the English/Irish blood alright - she's loving her little teaset I gave her for Christmas. I will post some of those photos soon. I adore seeing her growing/ learning; I am missing her now; been a few weeks. I'm about due again for a visit. She loves me to read to her. I look forward to all the great children's books we will read together. She loves music, too...and dancing.

Good luck with your busy term and I hope we see a glimpse of you from time to time.

PS...your new avy fits you! How do you like mine...I said in real life everyone expects me to be Wonder Women so I thought I would try it on for the weekend.

Petrarch, glad you had a great holiday season and hopefully some much needed rest from your intense studies. How is your parrot? I was wondering what you did with him when you went to Oxford? He's really cute; I love parrots!

Ha! I will have to go check that one out...so you and Virgil were in a bit of a fray...here's a secret, even is wife says she doesn't get into contraversies with him! I have the card with others send to me by members on Litnet and a friend I meet on another lit site years back. Hey, the Grand Cayon is grand! I have never been there but both my sisters have....it's totally amazing; take lots of photos! I loved your winter ones from Yosemite. I've been there but not in the winter...brrr, but beautiful.

England Blog

by Petrarch's Love on 10-16-2009 at 06:24 AM
Not having the time while abroad to keep up two blogs, the post here is to direct any interested parties to the blog I have recently started up about my travels through England. Good for anyone curious to see pictures of England or curious about Katherine Parr, last wife of Henry VIII:

English Food

by Petrarch's Love on 09-24-2009 at 05:31 PM
Hi All--Having a wonderful trip to England and just settled into Oxford where I have spent a heavenly afternoon among the ancient books of Duke Humfrey's Library at the Bodleian. Have been snapping hundreds of pictures on my tour thus far and, bearing in mind the lengthy discussion of foods that has taken place on these forums here http://www.online-literature.com/for...ad.php?t=46567, took some pictures of the local fare as well. Before posting anything so boring as pictures of Parliament

Response to Virgil

by Petrarch's Love on 11-09-2008 at 03:06 PM
My response to Virgil's recent blog entry http://www.online-literature.com/forums/blog.php?b=6743 (itself a response to a post of mine to a recent blog of his) became so lengthy that I felt it was more practical to make it an entry of my own:

Thanks for the response, Virg. First, I realize I came off a little more partisan than I intended when I referred to the Bush years as "divisive." To begin with, you're absolutely right that there have always been disagreements among

Winter's Tale Part II

by Petrarch's Love on 09-14-2008 at 02:47 PM
[This is a continuation of the previous blog entry, "Winter's Tale" Part I]

The Tragi-Comic
On the one hand Shakespeare is definitely interested in a tragic-comedy blend in this plot, and in a way that directly re-uses material from his own straight tragedies and comedies. For example, both WT and its near predecessor Cymbeline begin with plots very much modeled on Othello, but Othello re-written with a happy ending. One way of understanding Leontes’ character

Winter's Tale part I

by Petrarch's Love on 09-14-2008 at 02:39 PM
These two blog entries are a response to the Winter’s Tale discussion going on in the Shakespeare Discussion section of the forums (http://www.online-literature.com/for...ad.php?t=35848). It set out initially as a very short post, but I found myself becoming quite verbose. I thought that people who have either been following the thread, or have read the play before might be interested in the mini-essay I ended up with, so I decided to post it here for perusal. I've only really had a chance
