Hi Virgil--Thought I'd check back around these parts after being away for awhile. Glad to see it looks like you're back to haunting litnet again too. How's the family?

Hi Virgil, I'm so sorry about the T.S. Eliot article and that it's been so long that I've had it without responding to it. I finished my "30 Poems in 30 Days" thread and shortly after I broke my hip! (The cliché of the old lady w. the broken hip is yer ole auntie.) I'll catch up on my belated projects as I recuperate.

My best to you and your lovely family.

you've always requested to hear me sing.... I know I never come on here anymore and while I do feel bad, I don't think I will really make that much of an effort just because of my busy schedule (I'm facing finals again and now I'm off to Korea for three weeks next month).... in any case, here's a video of singing, I hope it reaches at least half your expectations.

Yes... I was thinking of the banning of Dante link. I think I'll start a thread on the issue.

Accck!!! What's next? Ban the Bible, the Qur'an, the Iliad and the Odyssey, and any work of art that possibly offends anyone anywhere?

Has anyone posted a thread per this subject anywhere on LitNet?

On the subject we've been discussing, check this outrage out:

The question to be asked is why do the students lack "filters"? What, have they abandoned teaching world history as well as literature? Our kids are getting dumber by the minute!

Haven't forgotten about poor old Tom. Will get to it by and by.

Have a good weekend, and Happy The Day When Everybody's a Little Bit Irish. Both yours fooly and what's his name are each half-Irish. Himself, a bit miffed I'm not going to cook him a corned beef this year! 'Tis a sacrilege, don't you know. I don't care-- I can't deal with it this time. (Too greasy and stringy.)

Cicadas on Staten Island

by Virgil on 06-16-2013 at 11:24 PM
On Staten Island, cicadas only make their presence every seventeen years. I had no idea they were native to this place when I first moved here. I had heard of cicadas in poetry, but when I came across one on a page I read right over it as another of the million insects I had no real knowledge of. There is the ancient Greek myth of Tithonus, a musician who is granted eternal life by the Aphrodite but who forgets to give him eternal youth with eternal life, and so forever grows older and older

Yesterday was Mother's Day in the US. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. I offer this neat video clip, titled, "All Things Mothers Say In A Day" sung to the exuberant finale of Rossini's William Tell Overture.

Stones Play "Emotional Rescue" Live

by Virgil on 05-09-2013 at 09:17 PM
The big news from the new Rolling Stones tour is that they have included the song "Emotional Rescue" into their set list. You may wonder why that is such big news, especially since the song reached number three on the US charts when it came out as a single back in 1980. It’s certainly not every song that breaks the top ten. The album, also called “Emotional Rescue” broke to number one. Not bad for an album where the band doesn’t follow it up with a tour. I remember that summer it came

Mama's Finger: Update Post Operation

by Virgil on 04-17-2013 at 11:30 PM
Well, my mother had her operation on her finger Wednesday. You can read about the need in my previous blog entry. All went well. The only hangup was trying to get one of her earrings off. She was to take all jewelery off, but no matter how we tried we couldn't unclasp the right one. The nurse put tape over it, something about it getting too hot during the operation and burning her. I can't say I understand. It had no bearing on the operation.

The operation took under

Mama’s Finger

by Virgil on 04-13-2013 at 12:42 AM
Let’s start with my mother being seventy-nine. She’s a strong seventy-nine, but still she’s actually closer to her eightieth birthday than the one she just passed. She has slowed down since her hip replacement from four years ago, but still she gardens and walks, and now that my brother has been away she’s living alone. Living alone actually gives her less to do because when my brother and his wife are at her house, she cooks and cleans for them as if she was forty years old and they were teenagers.
